lately the baby has been into what I call “walking breakfast” where he careens wildly around the room and occasionally bounces over to me for a bite of breakfast before stumbling away saying “Um num num” like a damn cartoon.

nothing has been a stronger tonic against the myth of personal effectiveness than the fact that I have been unable to persuade even a single friend of mine to read the Aubrey-Maturin series. I will never stop trying but I am getting nowhere.
