Meet our new Head of North America and President & CEO of Jewish Agency International Development (JAID)
@dan_elbaum
, and discover why he’s so thrilled to have joined The Jewish Agency:
For anyone who thinks that some are overreacting to Joe Rogan's joke about Jews and money, consider that Ilan Halimi and Mireille Knoll were murdered in 2006 & 2019 because their killers thought that all Jews have money.
This isn't a joke - it is a clear & present danger.
OTD in history, Jesse Owens won the 1st of 4 gold medals in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Coincidentally, I re-watched the 2016 film Race last night while running (ok jogging) on the treadmill.
Did the US IOC make the right decision in participating in the games in Nazi Germany? 👇
As the grandson of Holocaust survivors, I have spoken a lot about the wrongness of comparing anything to it.
I still believe that - mostly
That being said, other than scale, I see 1 major difference between the Nazis and members of Hamas
The Nazis tried to hide their crimes
Today, I visited the
@JewishAgency
Aliyah center in Warsaw, a hotel filled with Jews who fled the war. Most grabbed whatever they could before leaving. At the hotel, we provide them with food, clothing, shelter- whatever they need. Here, they hear a primer on life in Israel.
I have reached a sad conclusion. As much as I would not like to give up on a single Jew, I have given up on them. For me, they are deserving of “cherem” (formal exclusion from the Jewish people)
I hope that some day they see what they have become and offer some repentance. I am not that religious a person, but I do pray that God forgives them for their actions. I, for one, do not believe that I ever will.
The founding of Israel is one of the most remarkable accomplishments in human history. But avoiding inconvenient facts does a disservice to that story.
@noamlweissman
& I wrote about why we’re telling the full story + tackling the tough questions
@ejPhil
:
I am talking about American Jews who say that killing the act of 1,400 Jews was consistent with the “Palestinian right to resist” and blamed Israel for the loss of life,
Yesterday I met Lilli and her family who fled their home & stayed at 14 different places as they drove through their war torn country until they crossed the border.
Now they are safe since they’re making Aliyah… as soon as they find a cage big enough for their 100 pound dog!🐾
I’m in awe of the people I meet here!
Tanya was born in St Petersburg, Russia. She didn’t know that she was Jewish till she was 18.
Today she volunteers with The
@JewishAgency
in Budapest to help Ukrainian Jews.
When I asked her why, she said “how could I do anything else?”
Before you just dismiss Kanye’s performance today as just the rantings of a mentally disturbed person, it’s worth remembering that history has some pretty clear lessons about the dangers of doing that.
A🧵about why I am going to
#marchforisrael
.
I work at
@JewishAgency
for Israel. Almost all of my Israeli colleagues know someone who was murdered and most have loved ones serving in the military.
I want to share a conversation I had with one of them that really stayed with me.
I am talking about American Jews who call Israelis Nazis and accuse them of acts of genocide - knowing full well and even relishing the hurtfulness of those terms.
Taking off for our nation’s capital for tomorrow’s
#MarchForIsrael
!
I will march for Israel.
I will march to free hostages.
I will march against antisemitism.
It’s not too late. Please join me. You will want to tell your children and grandchildren that you were there.
I am talking about American Jews who proudly use a heroic image of a paraglider – lionizing the Hamas murders who came into Israel and murdered and tortured their fellow Jews.
There will be a time in the future to wonder about how such people could have emerged from our community. It should involve introspection as to Jewish and Israel education. But for now, there is nothing to be done with them.
I am talking about American Jews who question whether the atrocities committed against Jews are accurate or propaganda and use phrases and terms that sound remarkably like Holocaust deniers.
After a weekend of Jewish Covid conspiracy theories and lies about Israel being racist, I am so excited to go to DC this week to see President
@Isaac_Herzog
address a joint session of Congress.
Forget the background noise, this is a historic moment that we should savor.
🇮🇱🇺🇸
Since October 7, when 1,400 Jews were slaughtered, I have been overwhelmed by the unity and support for Israel of the global Jewish community. I have spent every day fielding phone calls and meeting with American Jews who want to do all they can for their fellow Jews in Israel.
I have also seen another group of American Jews. They are a minority, a fringe, but they are vocal and make their voices heard in a disproportionate manner. These include, but are not limited to, members of
@IfNotNowOrg
&
@jvplive
To be very clear, I am not talking about American Jews who have expressed sympathy for Palestinians or have criticized Israeli policies.
I am also sympathetic. I have also been critical.
Indeed, it has been this response from American Jews, that along with the bravery and sacrifice of the Israeli people, that has given me the strength to function as a professional and a human being.
I got a lot of nice feedback from my piece 'Three Things We Do Wrong When We Talk to Our Kids About Israel" I also got some suggestions of what I didn't mention.
With thanks to the critics, please see 3 more suggestions to connect your kids to Israel.
I want to be clear that this post represents my views and not any organization with which I am affiliated or have been affiliated. I have spent, and will continue to spend, my professional life, seeking to advocate for Jewish unity and connecting all Jews to Israel and each other
President Biden’s offhand comment about Israel making Jews safe didn’t get that much media attention. But it took me back 125 years. My latest in

This has been a challenging year but Hanukkah is the time when we celebrate miracles and victories over adversity.
So I’m challenging myself to reflect on

this holiday and naming 8 things that give me hope. Please share yours too - I’d love to hear them!
For the 4th night of Hanukkah, I am highlighting
@jewishagency
subsidiary Amigour which operates 57 housing projects in Israel with over 7500 seniors- many of them Holocaust survivors.
Allowing them to live their last years with dignity is the least we can do.

Some of you are seeing anti-Israel sentiment in your news feeds today. I just visited a
@JewishAgency
Pre-Army Academy where Arab&Jewish Israelis work together & learn about each other’s culture.
Don't believe the hype. Israel's diversity is real and no report can undermine that
I have sung Hatikvah 1000's of times. I've never been as moved as when I sang it at a synagogue in Gondor, Ethiopia.
This year, 3000 Ethiopian Jews fulfilled the 2000 yr old hope to be a free people in our land, the land of Zion & Jerusalem.
Am Yisrael Chai!
#8lightsofHanukkah
On the final night of Hanukkah, I want to acknowledge our supporters who make it all possible.
Thank you
@jfederations
,
@khuia
,
@CUFI
and our donors around the world. You are truly indispensable in all that we do to protect and connect Jews everywhere.

It’s easy to find reasons for pessimism in this past year. But when the history of 2022 is written, I suspect that its first few chapters will be about how the global Jewish community accomplished miracles together. I wrote about one in particular
@JNS_org
Welcome to this new citizen of Israel as she joined 110 other Ethiopian Jews in first setting foot in the Jewish state.
Wishing her a life of happiness and peace.
Am Yisrael chai!
Welcome home! Today, as part of the continuing

@almog_doron
was waiting on the tarmac to welcome them with open arms, along with our Chairman of the Board Mark Wilf 🇮🇱
The saddest day in the Jewish calendar, Tish'a B'Av, marking the destruction of both temples, starts tonight.
The sages explain that the temples were destroyed because of infighting among the Jewish people.
Let us resolve to not allow history to repeat itself.
Am Yisrael chai.
This picture is in my office. I look at it a lot.
It is my grandmother’s class in Seylish, Czechoslovakia (now Ukraine) She’s in the second row, 4th from right.
Nearly every one of those kids were murdered for being Jews.
Israel has to defend itself. No one else ever will.
Keeping the Israeli people close to my heart as I watch the news.
It seems long ago that President
@Isaac_Herzog
spoke before Congress.
Yet his words about hope & faith seem even more relevant today. I have hope & faith in Israel, and always will.
This man is
@JewishAgency
royalty.
Micha Feldman was one of the chief architects of the 1991 operation that brought nearly 15,000 Ethiopian Jews out of Addis Ababa in 1 weekend during a civil war.
Ethiopian Jews simply call him "Aba Micha."
What an honor to be here with him.
As my friend
@AviMayer
points out, isn't it interesting that the same people who demanded 10 forms of proof that Hamas murdered babies (they did) are immediately willing to accept the same terrorist org's word about who destroyed the hospital?
Perhaps this isn't about the truth.
"For G-d’s sake, he was the first man off the plane at Entebbe."

“To be a free people in our land.”
Yesterday we sang Hatikvah in Gondar, Ethiopia. Today we sing with more than 200 Ethiopian Jews as they stand on Israeli soil, their new home, for the very first time.
Welcome home.
“During history’s darkest hour, the world turned its back on them… Today, we must rededicate ourselves to assuring that our survivors are more than a political symbol.”

This proud new citizen of Israel joined 264 other Ethiopian Jews today in arriving at their new home.
So proud of the work The

Israel is not perfect, but there is no other country that would do this.
Ending the mission with a gift to my wife (who isn't on Twitter) whose dedication to our family allows me to make these trips.
100 percent of proceeds go to Megermeria that teaches new olim to make jewelry.
The symbolism couldn’t be more perfect
It is difficult to explain how important Jerusalem is to Ethiopian Jews. It is part of their stories, expressions and every aspect of their life.
It was also interesting to face north when praying to face it!
35 Israelis have been killed by Palestinian terrorists this year.
If my math is right, that is the equivalent of around 1,250 Americans & on pace to be over 2000 - not far off Pearl Harbor numbers.
Worth pondering the next time you see Israel condemned for defending itself.
Wherever I go, parents ask me how to encourage their kids to feel connected to Israel.
I am pleased to share some of my secrets here in Jewish Chicago - The JUF Magazine

Just don't tell my daughters! :)
5 days, 6 flights, 3 countries, maybe 14 hours of sleep, and most importantly, 144 new citizens of the state of Israel.
As I head home to the states, I will be thinking of my new friend Rina and wishing her a wonderful life in her new country.
If you will it, it is no dream!

Thank you to Maura Moynihan for stating the fact that CUNY has not done enough to fight antisemitism.
Your father would be proud.
So, I am going to

I will march for Israel.
I will march to free hostages.
I will march against antisemitism.
I hope the world hears us, but I really hope that Israelis see us and feel our support.
Please join me. It's important.

These

They’re not paid. They’ve families & lives at home, yet here they are at a Polish border helping refugees & offering comfort to people who left everything that they’ve ever known behind.

Torah Tuesday...Valentine's edition!
Who knows this one, a past question pulled from the annual Bible quiz for high schoolers started by
@jewishagency
& the president of Israel?
Today, for
#8lightsofHanukkah
, I am thinking of our
@JewishAgency
emissaries who move across the 🌎 to connect Jews to Israel & each other.
I have a special place in my heart for our shinshinim (18 yr old) emissaries & the energy & smiles they bring.
My youngest daughter is a camp counselor. Her campers are 6 years old Several of them were at the parade yesterday in Highland Park.
One of them hid behind a port-a-potty during the shooting. Another one ducked behind bushes. Several ran into Starbucks.
They are 6 years old.
The issue of “who is a Jew” has been the subject of great debate within the Jewish community. Talmudic scholars, communal leaders and Israeli politicians have argued fiercely. All arguments had just one thing in common. No one ever said “I wonder what Rudy Giuliani thinks....”
No, Mayor, you’re not “more of a Jew than Soros.” You’re entitled to your views, and to denouncing his. But it’s offensive to deny anyone’s faith, and worse to endorse classically antisemitic conspiracy theories.
It’s January 10 and I am staring at a sukkah.
The reason is that I’m in Kibbutz Kfar Aza where over 100 out of 700 residents were murdered, tortured & kidnapped by Hamas on Oct 7. Other than marking the sites of the slain, nothing has changed.
Here, every day is October 7.
“My father told me ‘we’re leaving for Jerusalem tonight. Buy shoes, a jug for water and a shovel.’ When I asked ‘why a shovel’ he said ‘Because not all of us will make it.”
Listening to the harrowing stories of those who escaped during the 1980’s.

25,000 German civilians died in the bombing of Dresden – did that make World War II unjust?
30,000 Confederate prisoners froze to death in prisons during the Civil War. Did that make that war unjust?
The death of innocents in Gaza is tragic. It does not make 🇮🇱’s cause unjust.

I’m in the air and there is major drama unfolding.
The flight attendants can’t serve drinks because we won’t get out of the aisles handing out candy. There is not an Ethiopian child who will arrive in Israel without a sticker book and a cavity.

An AJC-sponsored flight of Ukrainian Jews fleeing Russia‘s aggression just landed in Israel!
Facilitated by the

Never again will Jews feel isolated, abandoned, and homeless. 🇮🇱🇺🇦
Naked antisemitism such as in this image is not “an error of judgment.” We have to wonder if the
@nytimes
editors would’ve published a similar cartoon depicting any other country or people.
If this war is showing the worst of humanity, it is also providing us with real bright lights of human kindness. It is speaking truth to the wisdom of the sages that every Jew is responsible for one another.

She then said if Americans and the rest of the world really knew about and remembered the acts of torture, rape, mutilation, and murder that took place on October 7, how could so many of them dispute or even question Israel's right to defend itself and deter further aggression?
Today is the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht - the night of broken glass.
The civilized world was horrified. Many eloquent statements were made.
But no one saved the Jews.
Today, Israel protects its citizens.
And the world can make as many statements as it pleases.
We Jews have tried to enlist the world’s sympathy– it hasn’t worked well for us.
In the words of
