The best way to mitigate, and this is definitely not for everyone, is to pay for a business / ad account with Instagram. I recommend this to famous, high-net-worth, or other at-risk people. Business accounts that spend money will get real human customer service at Meta.

As far as I can tell this person has done mostly everything right. This is likely caused by a corrupt employee at Meta/Instagram getting paid (bribed) to steal an account handle from someone.

Interesting story on how a person's Instagram account was taken over just because the hackers wanted their Instagram handle and the person refused to sell (which would violate ToS). This is why personal cyber security is so very important. Link ๐

The best thing you can do when using hotel wifi is to connect through a travel router like this one. You => travel router => vpn => hotel wifi => internet.

Maybe this can get a little shoutout from @laparisa? ๐
A common question my clients ask me: Which OS is the most secure? The answer is complicated, and largely depends on what is meant by โsecureโ. It may surprise you. A short ๐งต 1/8 ๐

If you can accomplish your personal computing needs by just using a browser (all you use are websites / webapps), then you should use a Chromebook as your personal computer. For work, use whatever computer/OS you need to or is issued to you by your employer. /7

To reiterate, if youโre a regular person the best OS that will protect you from hacking, phishing, and other exploits is Chrome OS. Its security model is tight. Every tab, window, web extension, or app runs in its own process. Processes are sandboxed and isolated. /6

The most secure OS for regular folks isโฆ Googleโs Chrome OS (used in Chromebooks). This might be surprising, because Google is not considered to be very privacy-focused. But remember, this about โsecurityโ, NOT โprivacyโ. /5

Privacy is different. Itโs a measure of whether or not what you do on the computer staysโฆ private. Is the manufacturer getting detailed analytics on how you use your computer? What about the OS vendor? Are they collecting data? Can the websites you visit snoop as well? /4

Security is a measure of protection that the OS has from hacking. How difficult is it for a hacker to install malicious software on your computer? Are apps sandboxed/isolated? Can installing a malicious app result in the hacker getting control of the computer and its data? /3

First, itโs important to understand the difference between โsecureโ and โprivateโ. Many folks conflate the two. They mean privacy when they say security and vice versa. /2
