<rant>The Lookout has been offline a bit, as I have been traveling around Northeastern California, catching up on non-emergency projects. I just read a mainstream media article on post-fire reforestation and it triggered a jumble of thoughts from my recent travels. /1

SB 310 has passed! This piece of legislation is critically important for tribes that want to govern the cultural burning activities of their member/citizen base in their own sovereign way!

There is strong biophysical science supporting forest restoration and fuel treatments to reduce the risk of catastrophic fire but little is known about their cost effectiveness, so a team of @ERI_NAU and Conservation Economics Institute researchers set out to explore this. A 🧵

When the #ParkFire pushed up out of Mud Creek into Cohasset, east of the Cohasset School, it ran into a large area of thinned forest that has been prescribed burned over the past several years by volunteers from the Butte Prescribed Burn Association (Butte PBA).

How much does wildfire cost? How much does prescribed fire cost? Florida chose what’s cheaper. Will the Western US? #RxFire
A surprising thread on Florida wildfires: Many are stunned by the line in our film: "Florida proactively burns more in one year than California has burned in the last 50 years". People always ask 2 big questions: -California is *that* derelict? -Florida has wildfires?

Impressive new paper revising our knowledge of fire return intervals in the western Cascades (implications for biodiversity and old growth). Indigenous fire stewardship seemed to play a major role:

The documentary Elemental continues to make the rounds, so I’ll recommend this review by the Association for Fire Ecology @fireecology : https://t.co/EISFPJIDer

Last weekend I supported an Indigenous cultural fire camp in the south Cascades; spent a day assisting ecological burns in the Willamette Valley; now I’m leaving for a prescribed fire training (in Spanish!) in NorCal. If this sounds fun to you, consider joining our team! 2/2

Most people don’t realize that Congress doesn’t grant rights to tribes, but they can take them away… Crafting legislation in the wrong manner can inadvertently lead to a diminishment of tribal sovereignty… It is important that cultural burning is acknowledged not defined.
