“Permanent Crisis: The Humanities in a Disenchanted Age” out in just a few weeks. Feel the hype: “…a magisterial tour-de-force of historical scholarship…It has the potential to alter the debate over the place of the humanities…” Warren G. Breckman

“A university, renowned for pioneering modern economics—and an eponymous school of thought that emphasizes fiscal restraint—should at least match its peers’ fiscal discipline & investment performance, let alone the market. It has failed to do even that.”
stanfordreview.org
While Stanford responded to the federal funding research freeze by halting administrative hiring and protecting research, the University of Chicago panicked. On January 28, hours after the Trump...

My 11yo was at a tournament last week where most kids (12U) threw upper 60s, low to mid-70s. Some kids bodies were built for it. Others less so. The intensity and level of play was more than what’s alluded to here. I don’t know how to answer the question.

It’s a paradox that parents of talented kids face. Their children could become really good at something they love. They could also get hurt.

Everything is a deal, a transaction, a racket. 💰💰💰 the only value and aim. Madness.
Well that’s wild. “Nvidia and AMD have agreed to give the US government 15 per cent of the revenues from chip sales in China, as part of an unusual arrangement with the Trump administration to obtain export licences for the semiconductors.”

Maybe the link btw labor markets & higher learning ain’t so direct: “Among college graduates, computer science majors are facing some of the highest unemployment rates, 6.1%…more than double rate among recent biology and art history graduates, 3%”
nytimes.com
As companies like Amazon and Microsoft lay off workers and embrace A.I. coding tools, computer science graduates say they’re struggling to land tech jobs.

Like the Faculty Senate, UVA Student Council votes no confidence in trustees: ““Students do not trust the Board of Visitors,” SC Pres Clay Dickerson said. “The choice to stand united or continue divided lies w/ the Board & students are watching closely.”

The Council’s no confidence resolution specifically took issue with the appointment of an interim president.

@cnewf The extortion is based on exploiting a gap in collective knowledge re: system of higher ed, what it’s done for several decades. Assert that the system is braining washing undergrads w/ one hand and strangle the system’s financial model w/ the other (health systems, STEM $).

Are “the elite universities of the United States leading the sector into a new age of political control of research, teaching, and admissions to restore the short-term cash flow of its medical centers.” @cnewf nails it and so much more here.
I wrote a new post at Remaking on the Brown U agreement--much worse than announced--and what it would take for faculty to block defeatist policy. I discuss 5 statements--Paxson at Brown, @adam_tooze vs. @lionel_trolling, Paul Campos, Rachid Khalili. The final 2 really help /1.

UVA’s cataclysm continues. Virginia judge finds that *8* Board members have been serving in violation of state constitution.
A state judge confirms that eight members of the BOV @UVA have been serving in violation of the Virginia Constitution and cannot continue to do so.

The $200 million fine for Columbia will be a feature of every “deal” cut with universities: “We can summarize Trump’s approach to markets by adapting a sentence, spoken by him, about how he grabs women: Trump grabs markets by the deal” in his avarice for $
theguardian.com
Everything the US president does is for money – and in serving his avarice, he’s managed to triumph over the market
