Everything is scary right now, and we are all adapting. With uncertainties looming, flexibility and adaptability are important traits for trainees and PIs. There are many great labs associated with many programs - highly recommend keeping an open mind. Opportunities await!.

PhD program applicants: if your PhD program is not direct admit into a specific lab, I recommend at least waiting until the interview phase to contact PIs. I also do not recommend applying to programs if there are only 1-2 labs you may want to join. There should be several.

I think I’m almost ready to resubmit my R01… and it feels weirdly calm this week, but I’m here for this because June was otherwise chaotic. Thankful for the support from family, colleagues, friends, and my new co-investigator, Lenny.

I’m just doing a terrible job of keeping it together lately. This year has really done a number on me. The deaths (in my family and in the world), the crises, the injustices. I am struggling hard.

After many years of training where people were looking over their shoulders to see what time I left lab, or me responding to “urgent” emails during any time off, I’m finally learning to value time for rest. Still working to retrain myself to accept rest and enjoy it.

Feeling guilty about going out of town last weekend when I have a deadline that I could have been working towards instead… but I know I am going to be more productive this week after time off to clear my mind & realign. “Work smarter, not harder” is my philosophy.
