.@agamoran Made a wonderful closing comment on a panel @JPAL_NA that we can’t just focus on delivering effective programs focused on individuals; we must find ways to address the underlying structural conditions that have created inequities in the first place.

One key concern for economists is to deepen the conceptualization of race and racism: not just a variable in an equation, but a process that needs to be unpacked and challenged. My colleague @jci504 has written about this for @wtgrantfdn
wtgrantfoundation.org
To begin shifting the underlying structures of inequality, scholars can harness the power of rigorous research to produce innovative, ground-breaking research that might further upend the narratives...

At those times, it is helpful to remember that it is the status quo policies, processes, and practices that have created racial inequities. And that means we CAN advance equity by working in a different way.

This work is challenging, and requires us to get comfortable with discomfort. At times it can seem impossible and make us want to retreat back to what is familiar.

It also requires us to take on the questions that tackle the underlying structural conditions that lead to inequity or equity, and to ensure our results from individual-level studies are described in that context.

Centering equity requires us to challenge our own assumptions and biases, who we consider to be “researchers”, and our notions of rigor, objectivity, and methodology. See, for example, @equitableeval

It also means centering equity in what we are welcoming people to. Our evidence building needs to tell us not only WHAT works, but also FOR WHOM, and WHY.

As the @JPAL_NA inaugural Partner #EvidenceChampion I challenge us as an evidence-building field to center racial equity in our work. That means a few things to me. Of course it includes diversifying perspectives and who is included in the field.

Don’t ignore the warning signs here, but do ignore the warning message when you leave. I would share a link to my new social media account, but the site is blocked here as “potentially harmful”. Thanks @GeorgeTakei for the recommendation. #Mastodon
