I’m proud of Sen. Thom Tillis. But I’m even prouder of Thom Tillis the person. Thank you, Thom, for everything you’ve done for me, and so many others. 10/10. #ncpol @SenateGOP.

He supported me nd countless others not for personal gain or public recognition, but because he genuinely cared. His acts of kindness were never publicized, done simply out of compassion. 9/10.

I share these moments to highlight that while recent press & social media focuses on Tillis the politician they often overlook Thom the person. I’m deeply grateful for his political work serving North Carolina, but what defines Thom for me is his quiet, selfless friendship. 8/10.

That same year, during a caucus meeting, I mentioned to Thom that a freshman Republican was struggling after being criticized by a local website. Without hesitation, Thom sought out the legislator and spent the next hour listening and offering thoughtful counsel. 7/10.

Despite his role, he always made time to guide me & many .legislators, Republicans and Democrats alike. His accessibility & willingness to offer advice stood out. In 2013, I recall a freshman Democrat sharing that he’d just had a 90-minute conversation with Thom about life. 6/10.

Instead, he gave me a candid breakdown of what it took to serve in Raleigh, the time, the role, and the sacrifices involved. As a freshman in the NC House of Representatives, Thom remained a steadfast friend and mentor. 5/10.

Skip to 2012, Thom was now a prominent figure in North Carolina politics, leading Republicans to a majority in the NC House & serving as Speaker. When I called him that May to discuss running for State House, he didn’t push or encourage me to run, despite what some claimed. 4/10.

We’d meet for breakfast at Bob Evans on Sam Furr Rd, where he patiently listened to my concerns & offered advice. He had no obligation to invest in me, but I realized Thom’s motivation: he wanted our community to thrive, & by supporting me he was serving the place he loved. 3/10.

Unlike other candidates who dismissed me, Thom stood out for his warmth. A few weeks later, Thom chose not to run for the Huntersville Town Board, I won my first public office that fall. During my first year, Thom mentored me, helping me grow as a legislator and a person. 2/10.

I met @SenThomTillis in the summer of 2005 when we both filed to run for the Huntersville Town Board. Thom, fresh off a term as a Cornelius Town Commissioner, was kind and gracious, treating me, an unknown candidate with no expectations of victory, as an equal. Thread… 1/10.
