Or, quite possibly, an issue so off-the-radar that I can’t even imagine it yet. In closing, if we want to get John MacArthur right, let’s learn from his example, not just in church-state relations, but in having a Godly answer for all of life.

So what are the next areas where we can be studying? How can we be prepared to be the next man standing alone as others compromise? Perhaps the next crisis will require us to face racial differences. Maybe our food and medicine. Maybe AI, copyright law, or taxation.

That��s what set MacArthur apart. He had spent the years developing an answer before the problem presented itself. He already knew where he stood. “Why and how to defy the magistrate” was only a contingent piece of theology, never guaranteed to see the light of day in application.

It’s great that they are now prepared for another “church vs. state” issue, but that’s just hindsight. The next crisis will look fundamentally different. It’ll come from an unexpected direction. So the real lesson is that we need to be going deep into all areas of ethics.

But here’s where I disagree: that’s not fundamentally the solution. And it’s not fundamentally why MacArthur was different. You see, nobody was prepared because they didn’t spend the time to develop a robust theology in an area of study where they didn’t see a crisis coming.

The standard answer is: “we weren’t prepared in this area of theology.”.I believe that’s correct. Most pastors never developed a system of ethics to practically address spheres of authority and civil disobedience. But in hindsight they have now done so, and feel prepared.

However, some pastors have lauded MacArthur, repenting of their own poor choices where applicable. If a similar scenario arose in the future, they are now prepared to do the right thing. And part of that process is reflecting on why they faltered in the first place.

The capstone of John MacArthur’s tremendous legacy was his resistance to tyranny in 2020, when he defied the civil magistrate, refusing to close his church. Sadly, many Christian leaders have still not learned from this example, and to this day condemn his actions.
