Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, know your rights! Before you fly, study the Air Carrier Access Act. Look up local accessibility laws in the destination you’re going to. Be your own advocate & know your rights. Learn more at

It’s worth the extra money to travel with a tour company that specializes in accessibility. Having a local guide that knows all about accessibility within the destination is tremendously helpful. I’ve enjoyed guided accessible tours in South Africa, Israel, Estonia, and many more

Accessibility around the world is constantly improving. There are a ton of destinations that I can now visit that would’ve literally been impossible for me 10 years ago. Thinking about the future of accessible travel excites me!

Talk to local wheelchair users in destinations you visit. By making an effort to talk with other wheelchair users, I have learned SO much about what living with a disability is like in other countries. Lots of similarities, lots of differences.

Always be prepared for the unexpected. When my wheelchair charger blew up in Germany, I referred to my notes & called a local wheelchair repair shop. I had a new charger within 2 hours. Crisis averted! 👏 . [Celebrating the averted crisis by chugging German beer 😂]

Break out of your comfort zone while traveling & try new experiences. By doing this, I’ve gone adaptive ziplining, ridden in a hot air balloon, went adaptive rock climbing, and even adaptive water skiing!

Traveling as a wheelchair user is TOUGH sometimes. On almost every trip I do, something goes wrong at some point. But if you stay calm and know that for every problem there is a solution, it’ll all work out in the end.

I went on my first international trip as a wheelchair user at the age of 15. Since then (I’m now 32), I’ve visited 41 countries & all 7 continents in a powered wheelchair. ♿️ Here’s what I’ve learned along the way…

Today, a @Delta flight attendant threatened me with guns, saying that I (a wheelchair user) had to exit the plane before my wheelchair arrived at the plane door. According to the Air Carrier Access Act, this is illegal. I never knew I could be shot for abiding by the ACAA.
