If a farmer is lucky, they can get 40 or more crops. Change can be hard, intimidating, risky, and expensive. Overall farmers are moving in the right direction towards being better stewards of the ground. But it just doesn't move as fast as today's fast-paced world wants it to.

For decades, Iowa has wrestled with the challenge of water quality. In the mid-2010s, Des Moines Water Works took legal action against agriculture-heavy counties, citing nitrate pollution in the watershed. The lawsuit ultimately failed, but it seemed to spark rural--urban divide.
