The paper contains much more and feedback is welcome! Our elements will extend this work and highlight important considerations (e.g., text inclusion/exclusion, scaling method, validation considerations) for researchers doing similar measurement tasks:

In additional validation exercises, we also show that our measure is predictive of PAC contributions (e.g., pro-choice PACs are more likely to donate to candidates with more liberal scores on our abortion measure) within party and while controlling for unidimensional ideology

Our measurements rely on supervised machine learning to isolate issue-specific text and word embeddings (doc2vec) to scale candidates' positions to an issue-specific score. We show our measures recover human judgments of issue text *within party and with controls*

In the paper, we develop Candidate Positioning Indexes (CPIs) for six policy areas: abortion, education, energy, guns, healthcare, and immigration. We are in the process of expanding and validating other issue areas (foreign policy, election admin, the environment, policing).

Unidimensional measures of campaign positioning are useful, but they often obscure important issue-level variation in candidates’ positions. Take Elise Stefanik’s more conservative stance on guns versus her more moderate position on the environment in 2022

Excited to share a new project at #polmeth40!! @colinrcase and I pair word embeddings with an original corpus of candidate campaign positions to estimate candidates’ ideological positioning on policy issues (e.g., abortion, healthcare, trade…). See some initial takeaways below:

Watching the communication strategy of the "No's" on the debt ceiling vote will be interesting in the coming days. If you are wondering why members would openly criticize a "bipartisan" agreement, check out our paper!.

As @colinrcase and I find in our forthcoming @PolBehavior piece, the minority party can successfully undermine public support for bipartisan legislation when they employ counter messages.
