Nearly a month ago, I left my data editor job at @KPCC @LAist. I decided that the best way for me to continue to effect the change I want to see in newsrooms today, as a journalist and a Black woman, was to leave. To that end, I’ve struck out on my own. 1/7

Sharing her personal experience with unemployment is a great example of how we can move the needle toward more engaged journalism and how we make genuine connections with audiences by being real, vulnerable and human as journalists.

I'm working on environmental justice reporting with @UCSBEJ, where I’m collaborating with @DenaMontague and @Dan_CARINO. And, I’m busy with @Autumn_Bry and their anti-racism work on #JusticeInJune.

I’m happy to have started a relationship with @shiftpress, where they do amazing work to empower Houston youth by covering their communities. @uyive_ I can’t wait to see what we can build together.

Thanks to @RinaPalta and @JuliaAngwin at @themarkup for bringing me on to work for the summer. Keep an eye out for some great work to drop soon. I’m also stoked for upcoming work with @thealliance_WP, who fight bias and discrimination in athletics.

A loving husband and a lovable German Shepherd mix have kept me grounded (and covered in fur) through all of this. And, I’m proud to say less than 30 days into this new unknown, I not only live to tell the tale, but I’m thriving.

As I’ve said before, I stand on the shoulders of the great, brave, women who have tread this ground before me: My mother, grandmother, aunties, sisters who’ve never wavered in their support. And, dear friends who have become like family. I wouldn't be who I am today without them.

On April 1 (ironically, April Fools’ Day), I began paperwork to start @codeblackmedia_, my new digital media and data consultancy. Within weeks, I was official. And, I was terrified of the unknown ahead.
