Audiences don't hate diverse characters. What they hate is being slammed as bigots for rejecting bad work from pretentious, unskilled activists posing as writers. If the demography of your characters becomes more important than the story, your story will probably suck.

Back then with no internet and only a handful of channels HBO was a premium service with uncensored, commercial-free programming you couldn't see anywhere else. There was absolutely every reason for them to go hard AF with the intro.
There was absolutely no reason for HBO to go this hard introducing movies back in the 80’s. But I’m glad they did:
