Classic movies and television are discussed here! (No politics.) Please check out my film and TV reviews at and clips on my YouTube channel at . If I retweet too much for your tastes, you can go to my profile and turn off RTs.
David Soul has died at age 80. All the obits will mention Starsky & Hutch in their headlines, but let's not forget Salem's Lot, Magnum Force, and his
#1
hit song "Don't Give Up on Us."
RIP Robert Conrad, who died today at age 84. Most of the obits will focus on Wild, Wild West--but he did so much more. Let's not forget Black Sheep Squadron, Hawaiian Eye, Centennial, Palm Springs Weekend, and those famous battery commercials!
Tweet an actor wearing sunglasses from one of your favorite movies!
I'll go with the lovely Gene Tierney in Leave Her to Heaven. (The restored print looks fabulous, too.)
Recommend one--JUST ONE--Katharine Hepburn movie to someone who has never seen a Katharine Hepburn movie!
My pick would be Desk Set. I thought about Bringing Up Baby, but not everyone loves a screwball comedy (though I do!).
Tonight, it’s our annual holiday viewing of The Bishop’s Wife. I don’t know why it’s not as beloved as other Christmas favorites. It’s a joy from start to end.
You’re single, plan to attend your school reunion, and want to impress! If you could take as your date any film/TV star from any era, who would it be?
I’m taking Hedy Lamarr, the perfect combination of brains and beauty.
Post a photo of a favorite actress!
I'll go with Eleanor Parker, who deserves more attention than she usually gets. This photo is from The Naked Jungle (a favorite).
Recommend one Spencer Tracy movie--just ONE--to someone who has never seen a
#SpencerTracy
movie!
I found this challenge extremely...well, challenging. I finally chose Bad Day at Black Rock. It's a fabulous film, but cast another actor in the lead and it wouldn't be the same.
If you could recommend one Greer Garson movie--just one--to someone who had never seen a
#GreerGarson
movie, what would you pick?
My recommended film would be Random Harvest.
A tweet of appreciation on this Veterans Day to all those who have served in the military!
Here are photos of Marine Corporal Gene Hackman and Marine Staff Sergeant Bea Arthur:
Just watched To Kill a Mockingbird again. Mary Badham and Brock Peters are both sensational. I adore Elmer Bernstein’s music, Robert Mulligan’s elegant direction, Stephen Frankfurt's opening title sequence, and Kim Stanley’s wistful narration.
Tony Randall was never a top box office draw, but he sure had a great run in film and TV throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
His career included supporting roles in major films (e.g., Lover Come Back), starring roles in movies like the intriguing 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, and, of course,…
I’m not a fashion expert by any stretch, but these three dresses have to rank among the most stunning in cinema history. Of course, the actresses wearing them help!
Double Indemnity wins the
#FilmNoirTournament
, baby! It was a thrilling finish today as it edged The Maltese Falcon by just 48 votes out of 2,022.
This may be my favorite tournament (even if my faves Out of the Past and Laura lost in Round 2). Thanks for voting and commenting!
Not as much fun as sunglasses, but I just got wet in the rain, so...
Tweet a picture of actor with an umbrella from a movie or TV series you like!
I'll go with an obvious choice.
Watching White Christmas and just saw my favorite number: "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing." Great song, exquisite choreography, colorful outfits. It's got it all.
Once upon a time, NBC, CBS, and ABC:
- broadcast over 30 episodes of a TV series per season
- had no reality TV shows
- produced original movies every week of the season
- showed recent theatrical films
- had over 10 soap operas on their combined weekday schedules
Name a versatile performer whom you think was equally impressive at playing good and unsavory characters.
I’ll go with Fred MacMurray. A good guy in movies like Remember the Night and The Absent-Minded Professor; morally corrupt in Double Indemnity and The Apartment.
Post a picture of a hot classic TV spouse! That's it...just an attractive classic TV wife or husband.
I've been watching a lot of Mister Ed, so my pick is Carol Post!
Happy Tuesday, classic film & TV friends!
Can you recommend a great classic movie that can be streamed for free? Please include where to watch it.
My recommendation is Leave Her to Heaven with Gene Tierney & Vincent Price. It’s currently on YouTube:
RIP Tommy Kirk. His performance in Old Yeller was outstanding. Alas, it was easily the best role he ever got and Disney cut ties with him after learning he was gay. He was a very likable performer in movies like Pajama Party and The Shaggy Dog.
Jack Cassidy wins the
#ColumboVillainGuestStars
tournament in convincing fashion, moving swiftly though the bracket in convincing fashion.
I'll remember this tournament fondly for its celebration of the all the great stars who played killers opposite Peter Falk's iconic sleuth!
A Charlie Brown Christmas wins our Classic
#HolidayTVSpecials
Tournament with a convincing victory over Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
This tournament evoked a lot of fond memories and I thank everyone for sharing them! Happy holidays to all.
Susan Hart, Shelley Fabares, & a red-headed Barbara Eden in "Ride the Wild Surf":
Susan Hart co-starred with Annette in Pajama Party & later married AIP co-founder James H. Nicholson. She closely guards the rights of some of her deceased husband's films.
If you could recommend one—just ONE—Maureen O’Hara movie to someone that has never seen one, what would it be?
I’m very tempted to recommend The Quiet Man, but Maureen may be even better in The Battle of the Villa Fiorita.
How big was Doris Day in the 1960s? According to the annual Quigley Top Ten MoneyMakers Poll, she ranked among the Top 10 box office draws from 1960-66 and she topped the list in 1960, 1962, 1963, and 1964.
Recommend one--just one--Kim Novak movie to someone who has never seen one.
My pick would be Picnic. My favorite Kim Novak movie is Vertigo, but Picnic is more accessible and Kim gives a fine performance as a small-town beauty who yearns for more.
Last week we were discussing sad songs and I mentioned "Alone Again" by Gilbert O'Sullivan. Several folks responded that Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun" was even sadder. I heard both on the Sirius XM '70s station this morning. Tears were almost shed!
Just saw that Sean Connery has passed away at age 90! I just watched him last week in The Rock, one of those movies that he effortlessly stole with his rugged charisma. He was my favorite James Bond, too. What were your favorite Connery performances?
As you may have seen already, the fabulous Glynis Johns has died. I adored her in The Court Jester and so many other movies. I write a brief profile on her in 2014. Did you know that Stephen Sondheim wrote "Send in the Clowns" specifically for her?
Glynis Johns played a mermaid in Miranda (1948) and its sorta sequel Mad About Men (1954). She had a great film and stage career in the U.K., though most U.S. viewers probably know her for appearing in Mary Poppins. I love her voice!
There may be no losers in the
#NeverNominatedActor
Tournament--but the winner is Buster Keaton!
The silent film great beat Edward G. Robinson by 34 votes out of a total of 1,916. It was the second-best turnout of any of our tournaments. Congrats to Buster's fans!
Real-life siblings George Sanders and Tom Conway played brothers in The Falcon's Brother (1942). Name another movie in which real-life siblings played siblings in a movie!
What film or TV star are you taking to your high school’s winter dance next month?
#DanceStarDate
I thought I’d make a splash with Lynda Carter as my date! (The white dress is so winter….)
Casablanca completed a dominant run today in our
#ClassicMovieCast
Tournament and was crowned champion by 1,684 voters!
It was grand fun to celebrate all the great casts over the last week. Thanks to everyone who voted and/or commented.
Yesterday was Teri Garr's birthday. I don't usually post photos on celebrity birthdays (because lots of others already do). But, hey, Teri is an exception!
I can’t believe John Mahoney never won an Emmy for Frasier. He did win a SAG award for playing Martin Crane. His comic timing is impeccable. Noticed that In the Line of Fire is on Netflix. May rewatch just to see him.
Ed Ames Dead: Daniel Boone Star Was 95.
My Mom was an Ed Ames fan and had the “My Cup Runneth Over” album. And who could forget his appearance on The Tonight Dhow with Johnny Carson?
You're the biggest movie star in the world and have signed up to play the romantic lead in a passionate love story. Who do you want to be your co-star?
It can be any performer at any point in his or her career. My choice is a pre-Bewitched Elizabeth Montgomery.
The
#Top25ClassicFilmPowerRankings
for this month are out! Casablanca tops the chart, followed by The Godfather and The Best Years of Our Lives. The biggest surprise is Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein at
#17
. I'll tweak the process next month to minimize ties.
@classic_film
I liked it when stars would show up on the Flintstones with Stone Age names such as Stony Curtis, Gina Loadabricks, and my personal favorite — Cary Granite.
Sad news! But in the twilight of his long career, Atkin was fabulous in The Kominsky Method!
Oscar-winning actor Alan Arkin, 'Kominsky Method' and 'Little Miss Sunshine' star, dies at 89
Myrna Loy wins the
#NeverNominatedActresses
Tournament by receiving 30 more votes--out of a total of 1,216--than Maureen O'Hara. The close race is a testament to the love bestowed on these marvelous classic movie actresses. Thanks to everyone who voted and shared a comment!
Natalie Wood was one of the great beauties of the silver screen (and, oddly, rarely mentioned with the likes of Marilyn, Liz, Hedy, Kim, etc.--but she was just as stunning).
Name an actor who you think was miscast in a role. Be sure to include the name of the movie. A photo would be nice!
My pick is Robert Wagner in Prince Valiant, which also featured the world’s worst wig.
I first remember Robert Loggia from his TV series T.H.E. Cat (that's Thomas Hewitt Edward). where he played a reformed cat burglar. Groovy theme, too. Became a popular supporting star, with an Oscar nom for Jagged Edge. Appeared in an interesting '50s sci fi pic The Lost Missile.
Fans flocked to Mr. Spock in droves this evening, but Barney Fife faithfuls nipped the Vulcan rally in the bud! In the end, Barney Fife was crowned champion of the
#1960sTVSidekicks
Tournament.
Thanks to everyone who voted, commented, and/or posted clever photos!
I remember liking The Big Chill in the 1980s (better than the similar Return of Secaucus 7). However, I didn’t care for it after last night’s rewatch. The yuppie, affluent characters mostly seemed extremely self-centered & unlikable. William Hurt came across best among the cast.
Watching another annual Christmas fave: Christmas in Connecticut. I had forgotten that Miss Stanwyck doesn’t make her first appearance until almost 14 minutes in the movie. Sheesh!
RIP Stella Stevens! She was another 1960s sex symbol who rarely got roles worthy of her talent. When she did—as in The Nutty Professor and The Ballad of Cable Hogue—she displayed a winning mix of vulnerability and intelligence.
Name a pre-1990 movie or TV show featuring a favorite performance by a Black actor or actress.
My first thought is Sidney Poitier for In the Heat of the Night. However, Sidney will be mentioned a lot, so I'll go with Ossie Davis in The Scalphunters. The movie is OK, but Ossie is…
Bobby Darin was 32 years-old when he learned his "sister" was his mother and his "mother" was his grandmother. He and Connie Francis were once in a serious relationship (her father caused her to break it off with Bobby). He wrote or co-wrote several big hits, including "Splish…
Let's share the love today with Leslie Nielsen! He played good guys ("The Bold Ones" TV series), crazy guys (Day of the Animals), and funny guys (The Naked Gun). His mid-career emphasis on comedic roles made a bigger star than ever before.
RIP
#DianaRigg
. I'm sure her performances in The Avengers, OHMSS, and Games of Thrones will be mentioned often today. But she was equally fabulous in Theatre of Blood, Bleak House, Rebecca (as Mrs. Danvers), playing her daughter's mother in The Detectorists, and many others.
Let's get ready for Feb 14th! Name a charming
#ValentinesDayMovie
romance that doesn't get shown often.
My pick is Crossing Delancey (1988) with Amy Irving and Peter Riegert.
A friend shared this: Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.
I may not be bionic now, but I have a new left knee! I stayed overnight in the hospital, but didn’t figure out I could access TCM on-demand until 3:30 am. I watched Girl Happy—not for Elvis, but for Shelley Fabares, Mary Ann Mobley, and Chris Noel.
It's that time of year again! What movie or TV star (past or present) are you taking to your high school prom?
I debated among the glamorous Kim Novak, bad girl Jane Greer, or sweet Annette Funicello. I ultimately decided to ask Annette--she already had this gown!
#PromDateStar
I'd like to know a few of your

! If you're willing to share, please respond with a favorite:
- Film noir
- Holiday movie
- Courtroom drama
- Animated film
- Hitchcock movie
These don't have to your top fave in each category, so don't spend long on this…
This is crushing! I spent an afternoon talking with Piper Laurie, who was a delightful, insightful interviewee. Here’s the link to my Piper Laurie interview:
Twitter Pals: I may be absent from here for a couple of days. Sometimes, life gets on the way of tweeting about classic films and TV shows (say what?). I shall return…just like so many unnecessary sequels! 😀
First, Carl Weathers and now Don Murray! Oscar-nominated for Bus Stop and killed off in the first season of Knots Landing, I remember Don Murray best for his fine performance in Advise & Consent (the best film ever made about U.S. politics).

bids farewell to legendary actor and podcast guest DON MURRAY. In a career spanning eight decades, the Oscar-nominated Murray gave us many memorable performances on both the large and small screens.

What was your favorite Quinn Martin production? (The pics below represent just a few of his TV shows.)
Epilog: My absolute fave is The Fugitive, but I have a soft spot for The Invaders.

Thurl Ravenscroft performed the song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. His many credits include providing the voice of Tony the Tiger.
