We love this idea from 5th-grade teacher Iliana Sucre: “We each wrote a poem based on George Lyon’s poem ‘Where I’m From’ and then picked our favourite line to make a whole-class poem. This is where we are from!” 🧡

Agree about the curriculum. But these ideas need not be mutually exclusive. Neither will help if teachers aren’t supported in their use.
Or we could just give teachers decent curriculum so they don't have to write their own lesson plans from scratch, or spend half their life on the Internet hunting for materials.

Academic peer pressure arises early: Children as young as 7 years old “begin to connect asking for help w/ looking incompetent in front of others,” researchers concluded in a 2021 study. But fear of looking dumb is often just half of a reticent student’s calculation. 🧵1/8

@ckmcguire and I wrote a commentary in RealClearPolitics, "Bipartisan support for public schools is a positive common starting point from which we might hope to build greater consensus on the role our schools can and should play in our democracy."

Many signs indicate U.S. democracy is in crisis. The publics trust in U.S. government is at a record low. Partisan disagreement about fundamental...

The consensus among voters on the idea that schools should provide an accurate account of our history and give attention to current issues is heartening.
Before we dive in, let’s set the stage. @ckmcguire sits down with @celindalake for a conversation on our annual Across the Aisle nationwide survey detailing parent and voter priorities, concerns, and values for K-12 education. #HKFellows

Q: Why doesn’t reading comprehension gets as much attention as phonics as essential aspects of #literacy? A: It’s harder to measure and perhaps harder to teach directly, but just as important.

This very balanced paper says that teacher evaluation is likely a culprit in the declining status of the teaching profession: https://t.co/UQFy8PrlsU

I meant to get this out sooner but hope it puts the recent NAEP scores on civic learning in perspective. See this:

Preparing today’s young people for full and healthy civic participation has never felt more urgent. Amid rising political rancor and threats to American democracy, it’s hard to see how future...

Never too soon to start turning people off again! One of the best things Dems could do the next two years is come up with a parent's rights agenda, including school choice, instead of reflexively opposing parents rights, which are pretty popular among....yes...parents.
Please tell me what I’m missing here. What are we doing next? Putting patients in charge of their own surgeries? Clients in charge of their own trials? When did we stop trusting experts. This is so stupid.

Good to see this from CJ McCollum #ElectionDay “If people want to drive change in their neighborhoods and communities, it’s important to exercise your right to vote,” said New Orleans Pelicans guard CJ McCollum, who is president of the National Basketball Players Association.

We really need to play offense instead of defense. And help responsible adults do their jobs. See this: https://t.co/4axW2YFA2H.

Teaching a factual, unabridged version of history is not inherently divisive. What is divisive is dragging educators through political battles

I am generally not on Twitter. My bad. But I am just beyond dismay with the violence in our society. When will the adults, especially our elected officials, decide enough is enough? 18 children gone, so far, in Texas.
