Passionate reaction from Slovakia goalie Simon Latkoczy regarding the World Juniors cancellation. Highly critical of the organization and explains how impossible it was for players to avoid contact with people outside of the tournament in Red Deer.
Is anyone else alarmed by how many teams feel like this is the only year to compete for the Stanley Cup? Like did the NHL get briefed that the meteorite is coming and we don’t have much time or…
Pretty neat touch for the AHL skills competition as the glass is out along the half wall, giving fans a chance to interact with the all-stars. A lot of players stopping during warmups to chat and sign autographs.
In his season debut, Jaromir Jagr -- The Legend -- had two assists over 15:10 of ice time in Kladno's 7-3 loss to Liberec today. Kladno has had an illness running through the team that already forced them to postpone a game, so the owner jumped into the lineup. He's 50 years old.
The Russian Hockey Federation confirms the death of Andrey Michkov, father of 2023 NHL Draft prospect Matvei Michkov. Sport Express reports the elder Michkov had been missing for the last two days and his body was discovered in a pond. An investigation is underway.
Thinking mostly about how much this means to Ryan personally, but also thinking about the courage he’s shown in seeking help and talking about it publicly. This moment might give hope to others struggling in silence. Inspired.
Unreal EBUG story in the ECHL last night: 19-year-old Rapid City native Brady Devries was home on winter break from Grand Canyon U, where he plays ACHA DIII. Utah Grizzlies needed a goalie. He STARTED vs. Rapid City Rush with lent equipment... and won.
Jim Montgomery...
Coached the Boston Bruins to the most wins in an NHL season (63)
Coached the Dubuque Fighting Saints to the most points by a team in a USHL season (98)
Captained Maine to the most wins by a team in a single season in the NCAA (42)
Great news for women's college hockey: ESPN announced it has acquired the rights to the Women's Frozen Four as part of a new multi-year agreement starting with this year's event. Semifinal one will stream on ESPN3, with semifinal two and the final being broadcast on ESPNU.
USA has gone to the full 1960 uniform for the World Juniors, whites and blues. Not just a throwback anymore. It's the official uniform. Amazing how right they got that so long ago.
Germany, welcome to the World Juniors. Sorry, nine of your players can't play. Also, we're gonna need you guys to start the tournament with back-to-backs against Finland and Canada. By the way, we're going to count goals after the buzzer. Would you like to proceed?
Sad to say I am one of those caught in ESPN’s cuts today. Could not be more thankful to have had the chance to work with some incredible people. Got to live my dream for a few years and do some of the best work of my career. Still have some stuff coming before I’m done, too.
I know we’re a little down on the Olympics without the NHL, but these are the kinds of moments that make me so happy for the players selected. The Olympic dream was dead for a lot of these guys. You know they’ll battle every day for the crest on that jersey.
Seamus Casey, Gavin Brindley and Jacob Fowler all grew up together in Florida and all three will eventually reach the NHl. Have to imagine Seamus was thinking about those knee hockey and street hockey games as Brindley realizes their dream tonight. Awfully touching moment.
Moritz Seider played 24:13 against Canada today in Germany's 5-3 loss at the
#IIHFWorlds2022
. That includes playing 10:30 of the third period. He had a goal and two assists, five shots on goal and was not on the ice for any of Germany's five goals against.
From Oregon to Florida, throughout SEC country and across the Midwestern plains, college hockey has a presence in most FBS schools thanks to the ACHA. And even if they're not NCAA D1, they at least look the part thanks to some truly awesome, unique jerseys
It’s the most famous hockey game ever played, but how much do you really know about it? With modern metrics manually tracked with the help of

Per USA Hockey, women's and girls' hockey membership increased by 4% in the 2018-19 season. A record 82,808 women and girls were registered to play hockey this year. Those numbers just keep going up every year. Great for the game.
Construction will soon begin on the Devante Smith-Pelly sculpture where he’ll forever be diving and slipping a puck between the columns of the Lincoln Memorial.
Monique Lamoureux-Morando just told Pierre McGuire that Jocelyne's shootout move is something they've been working on with their skills coach and it has a name -- "Oops I Did it Again."
Heartbroken for Coyotes fans that have endured the roller coaster and still showed up, loved their team and love this sport. Shit deal all the way around for them. Without this team, Auston Matthews may not have picked up a hockey stick. A lot of good came out of that market.
I'm hearing IIHF tournament directorate is expected to meet today to discuss the future of this World Juniors. I believe cancellation of the remainder of the tournament is on the table, but nothing decided yet.

Devon Levi (BUF) made 54 saves (second most in his NCAA career) as Northeastern beat Providence in a shootout. He's 6-1-1 in his last eight starts with a .954 save percentage over that span.
Been thinking it for hours, so I'm just going to say it out loud... If the Ducks commit to returning to their original uniforms and color scheme, we can just let them have Bedard. That is a price I'm, and frankly all of us should be willing to pay.
Um...
2022-23: AHL Goaltender of the Year

Lowest full-season save percentage as a junior or pro: .928.
Wolf is back. Back again.
For the second season in a row, Dustin Wolf has been named the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award winner as the AHL's outstanding goaltender for 2022-23.

Sheesh. Kirby Dach just said on TSN he thought his stick broke because of the sound he heard when he sustained his wrist injury. His stick did not break...
I'm really excited to announce that I have decided to return to independent media with the launch of Hockey Sense with Chris Peters on Substack. NHL Draft, prospects, college hockey, international hockey, Olympics, all of it in one spot. Subscribe today!
Tonight's elimination game was Spencer Knight's seventh elimination game he's played in *this season*. World Juniors, Hockey East, NCAA, Stanley Cup Playoffs. He's gone 5-2 with a .927 save percentage in those games which included a shutout in the WJC gold medal game.
Trevor Zegras (ANA) was credited with an assist on Alex Turcotte's (LAK) goal. He now has sole possession of second in USA's all-time (26) and single-tournament (17) scoring. One point from tying all-time lead.
Hours after being drafted by the Islanders in the second round, Aatu Räty already has two goals after one period at the World Junior Summer Showcase. First-rounder Oskar Olausson (COL) has the lone goal for Sweden. It's 2-1 after 1.
Tremendous respect for Westin, who was Adam Johnson’s teammate this year. Today has been a bizarre exercise in attacking someone in the absence of facts or context. For Westin to do this amid certain grief and shock is an act of grace and compassion that so many seem to lack.
The cancellation of the U18 Women’s Worlds instead of a postponement is unacceptable. Two birth years for all women’s hockey nations have been denied valuable development opportunities. Logistically it is difficult, but it is a top-division tournament. Figure it out.
Due to ongoing concerns regarding the spread of the Omicron variant, The IIHF Council has made the difficult decision to cancel all tournaments scheduled for January 2022.

Seven years ago, I started United States of Hockey while figuring out what I wanted to do after a job change. Tonight, I’m finally covering the WJC in person in a dream job with ESPN. Doesn’t happen without your support. Thank you all so much.
Kaapo Kakko out on the ice with Finland defending a one-goal lead, creates a turnover at his own blue line, buries the empty-netter. Finland with no NHL regulars is going to beat Canada. Just about perfect debut for the 18-year-old.
This Trevor Zegras (ANA) performance will go down as the best ever by an American in this tournament. All due respect to Doug Weight who has record, but that team didn't medal. Zegras had 18 points and almost all of them came on consequential goals he scored or assisted on.
On my last day at ESPN, I just wanted to say how big of an honor it was to work there. Being surrounded by top-in-class journalists was such a thrill. I could not have asked for better teammates than
@emilymkaplan
and
@wyshynski
. I know they’ll continue to do amazing work.
Tomorrow's gold-medal goaltending matchup will be between two Florida Panthers prospects and -- AND -- just because the hockey gods heard the Beanpot was canceled, we get Boston College's Spencer Knight vs. Northeastern's Devon Levi. USA-Canada also playing.
With another goal and an assist today Aatu Räty (NYI) is up to eight points through four games at the World Junior Summer Showcase. Looking more like his old self. Today scored on a high-skill shot under pressure, using his quick hands to create space and released puck in a blink
I know Hockey East was down this year, but Northeastern's Devon Levi (BUF) had the second highest save percentage in NCAA history (.952) while facing an average 31 shots against per game. 10 shutouts. Not sure how he's not one of the three best players in the country this year.
Lukas Reichel was a riser on my board all year long. Ended up at No. 17, but flirted with going even higher. One of my favorite players in the draft, a silky-skilled winger with a high-end release. As he gets stronger, he'll be even better. High upside pick here for Chicago.
Zac Jones (NYR) has looked really, really good in this USA-FIN game. Not a surprise, but he's provided a more dynamic element on the blue line. Getting a lot of ice time and making plays.
Dylan Guenther is going to give the Seattle Thunderbirds five first-round NHL Draft picks on their roster: Dylan Guenther (ARI), Kevin Korchinski (CHI), Nolan Allan (CHI), Reid Schaefer (EDM) and Brad Lambert (WPG). W(agon)HL
This has been one of the most difficult years I've experienced in my mental health. Losing my dream job, trying to help an 8-year-old through virtual learning, a death in my family, the spirals are frequent. Talk therapy and medication have been a saving grace.

Jake Sanderson (OTT) arrived in Beijing about 36 hours ago after spending over a week in a Los Angeles hotel in COVID protocol. Took 11 shifts in the first, already has one assist in his Olympic debut.
Germany's Moritz Seider (DET) has played more than any player in this tournament with 103:47 of total ice time, an average of nearly 26:00 per game. He has been on the ice for one even-strength goal against. (Six total, 4 PPGA, 1 SH ENG, 1 ES)
Cole Caufield (MTL) officially finishes his sophomore season with 30 goals and 51 points in 31 games. NCAA career: 67 GP, 49 G-38 A, 87 Points. Impressive run that likely ends with the Hobey Baker Award.
Was in Kalamazoo last night where Sebastian Cossa (DET) played the whole game for Toledo in ECHL preseason action. First shot he faced was a 2-on-0, made a spectacular save and several more after that. Cossa finished with 29 saves in a 6-2 win. Looked outstanding.
Steven Holtz nearly died after contracting adenovirus earlier this year. After recovering and being cleared, he returned to action a month ago and tonight scored his first ever collegiate goal -- a Game 1 OT winner in the Big Ten Tournament. Incredible.
It's prime time for
@UCLAhockey
to become a varsity program. A move to the Big Ten, homegrown players and a precedent set by Arizona State all cumulate to make Division I hockey the next big thing in Westwood, writes

Team officials have stated that their players are being extremely cautious, staying in their rooms, obeying all protocols and yet this still keeps happening. I'm told there is a wedding reception planned for the hotel USA and Sweden are staying in tonight. What else can they do?
Never played beyond prep level, started as a high school coach, won titles at every level he coached at on the way up (NAHL, USHL, AHL), two-time Stanley Cup champion and four trips to the Cup Final in those 10 years. One of a kind.
Jeremy Swayman named Team USA's player of the game, made an incredible post-to-post blocker save against David Pastrnak to keep USA in it. 15 saves overall.
Sebastian Cossa (DET) made 43 saves in a 2-1 win as he improved to 4-0 in the Kelly Cup Playoffs. The Toledo Walleye are a win away from advancing to the Western Conference Final. Cossa has a .954 save percentage going this postseason as he works in tandem with John Lethemon.
Nate Leaman on captain Jake Sanderson (OTT): "He's a winner. I think he's the best player in college hockey this year. He's respected in this room because of how he's carried himself. When you're best player is your hardest worker, it can really drive a team. "
The Rangers took Adam Sykora at No. 63. He was a late riser who surprised a lot of us by making Slovakia's World Championship team. He's got good wheels and despite not being big, gets to the hard areas of the ice and competes. I ranked him 47th.
Lane Hutson (MTL) scores the game's opening goal (that counts, at least). Was all alone in the slot and goes five hole. That's 48 points for Hutson this season, surpassing Brian Leetch for the highest-scoring season by a U19 player in NCAA since 1986-87.
When I asked Rangers prospect K’Andre Miller what a successful career would look like to him, he said “The biggest thing, I think, is having an impact on other people.” Insight into that answer, the person and the player:
According to the Big Ten, Wisconsin's Cole Caufield (MTL) was a unanimous selection for Player of the Year. Tends to happen when you lead the conference and country in points and goals.
