Team USA has won its first Hlinka Gretzky Cup and first summer U18 title of any kind since 2003 thanks to 5-3 win over Sweden in the final.

The last time USA won this tournament was 2003, when it was known as the Junior World Cup. Hadn't been in a final since 2016. With USA selecting players from outside of the NTDP, depth has always been an issue. Not this year. Big W.

In the last six meetings, USA is 0-6 and was outscored 30-13. There was that controversial OT loss in 2018 with the buzzer-beating GTG that shouldn't have been. But beyond that, they hadn't been particularly close at this event.

Pretty intriguing ECHL hire as Papaioannou had built a consistent winner in Brooks and coached Cale Makar. At just 41, he led the Bandits to six championships, five in the AJHL and one last year in the BCHL.
Ryan Papaioannou has been named the head coach of the @WheelingNailers. Papaioannou will be the 21st head coach in Nailers history, joining the Penguins’ ECHL affiliate from the Brooks Bandits, where he has spent the last 17 seasons in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
