make your own mistakes—and discoveries (sometimes these are the same thing).
i think a workshop can be helpful and the disparaging of all mfa programs is its own cliché, but sometimes i feel that the best "advice" i can give a student is to write more. write a hundred poems. then write a hundred more. don't be precious about it. just fail, and try again.
