Important point raised was difficulties to conduct the kind of studies that were cited as necessary in the ban. How do you create a control group with placebos when people are desperate for healthcare? How many will drop out when they realise they're receiving a placebo?.

That anyone would consider it a better choice in our current society to be trans rather than gay is undermined by the very fact that this committee meeting was considered so contentious that Duffield herself says this was her first committee meeting that had security present.

MP Rosie Duffield asked about broken bones due to blockers effect on bone density, which was refuted. She also used the phrase "transing away the gay", implying GIDS doctors would push minors into transition rather than exploration of sexuality, a phrase I'd never heard before.

Professor Ashley Grossman, an endocrinologist that does not treat minors, expressed concerns about the increase in requests for blockers before the ban, but even he could only say his concerns came from personal opinion and not from any evidence or studies.

It's worth noting that, as far as I am aware, there was not a trans person in the room. There were however several prominent anti-trans activists in the visitors gallery. Despite this, the evidence given was clear: Puberty blockers are reversible, side effects can be mitigated.

Yesterday the Women and Equalities Committee had a meeting on the evidence base on the safety and effectiveness of puberty blockers, and whilst flawed it was probably the most reasonable discussion of trans healthcare I've seen in a political setting.
