My 1st paper (!!!!) out today in Nature Communications Earth & Environment! We explore environmental justice & just transition concerns & opportunities for direct air capture in the U.S., finding that communities may support DAC, but with conditions.

Another article out! We argue that procedural justice must be core not only to *deployments* of novel climate interventions like methane removal but also to their *research*. Research that isn’t equity-informed too often produces inequitable “solutions”!

Finally, a normative takeaway: communities should be able to choose for themselves whether DAC is right for them. This is, most importantly, how we align the industry with justice principles. It's also how we mitigate risks of community pushback and project delays.

This is especially true when projects are led by or involve industries that share similar infrastructure or first-movers with the fossil fuel industry. For communities that have been overburdened by fossil fuels, anti-fossil fuel models for DAC are necessary.

We also find, importantly, that communities that have been overburdened by industrial activities may not trust new industries to take community needs and concerns seriously, which may lead to lower support for projects.

We find that communities must be meaningfully engaged in the development of DAC and share economic benefits from projects. This means we need to fundamentally rethink how climate infrastructure is produced, developing community (co-)production & ownership models.

Curious if your community is near a facility spewing ethylene oxide? (In a wild turn of events, Palo Alto actually is. ) Great mapping tool here:

A persistent theme in conversations with communities on DAC: the Hubs program will set the tone for the industry + signal whether or not it’s to be trusted. Community leadership/ownership, transparency, & anti-FF/-moral hazard provisions are critical. Come learn more tomorrow!.
