Yes, thanks, I do in fact see the irony of trying to write at 11 p.m. on a Friday night and citing Jonathan Crary's '24/7: Late Capitalism and the Ends of Sleep'. 🤦♀️

📢Judy Lochhead, @PeteEdwa and I just signed a contract with @EdinburghUP for our edited collection 'The Music of Absence: An Aesthetics of Loss in the New Millennium'. The book traces absence as a key theme in 21st-century music + highlights the philosophical potential of sound.

First day back on campus today and dressed all in black because I’ve returned equal parts corporate goth, contemporary art stereotype, mournful over my mat leave having ended, and a mum who’s learnt black is less prone to staining 🤓

When I told Lang I would be analysing his ‘Monadologie IX’ as part of my PhD project, he shook his head in deep concern and, after a few moments of silence, quietly said: “My god. Poor you.” 😟 You can read the full analysis here ➡️ https://t.co/pTtq7RYtNy ⬅️ (6/6)

In 2017, I spent some days in Lang's studio in Vienna. When I asked if we could have a look at the software he wrote and uses to compose most of his music, it took him several hours just to get the program running. He casually noted that composing was very time-consuming.⌛️(5/6)

In late 2020, I went to a festival featuring a couple of new Lang premieres. Forced to limit audience capacities due to the pandemic’s social distancing measures then in place, they programmed every concert twice. I sat through all of them — twice. 👯 (4/6)

Before we begin: the book is a deep dive into the work of composer Bernhard Lang. He is obsessed with repetition and calls himself a ‘repeat offender’ (lol). It is the result of 10 years (!) worth of research and is published with @IntellectBooks. https://t.co/gnk2L0ZK6N (2/6)

A little over a year ago, I had 2 babies. One had 10 little fingers and 10 little toes, the other just under 200 pages. As the arrival of the one (👶) eclipsed that of the other (📘) and my mat leave is now ending, I wanted to share some fun memories from the writing process.🧵
