Calvin Johnson started his career when Tom Brady was 30, played a full career, and has been inducted into the Hall of Fame as a first-ballot finalist - and Brady plays in another Super Bowl tomorrow night.
The Eagles are projected to be $35M under the 2023 cap. They have two upcoming first round picks. They found their franchise QB. They have A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert.
Something special is brewing here.
From passing on Justin Jefferson to creating a QB controversy with the drafting of Jalen Hurts to bringing back an aging Jason Peters to ignoring LBs altogether, Howie Roseman essentially created the blueprint for how to destroy a season AND a once-promising QB in Carson Wentz.
I nominate Jason Kelce as the most underrated Philadelphia Eagle... ever? He’s started 89 consecutive regular season games. Literally the only NFL player to play every game and be named First-Team AP All-Pro each of the last 3 years. He’s won a Super Bowl. What more do we want?
#Eagles
Isaac Seumalo tonight had one of the worst single game grades by any player at any position in PFF history. He allowed two sacks, six QB hurries, committed three penalties, and graded equally poor as a run blocker and pass blocker.
Carson Wentz just threw for 300+ yards, 2 TDs, and no INT and led game-tying and game-winning drives to beat the NYG on MNF, and he did it without the following players:
DeSean Jackson
Alshon Jeffery
Nelson Agholor
Jordan Howard
Lane Johnson
We needed this.
#Eagles
He is the ONLY PLAYER IN THE NFL to have suited up for all 16 games and been a First-Team AP All-Pro each of the last three years. In a literal sense, what could he do to rank higher? He is absolutely flawless at his craft.
#Eagles
According to PFF, Nelson Agholor has caught the lowest percentage of catchable deep balls out of any wide receiver in the league (20%). Free agent after 2019.
How would we all feel about this
#Eagles
wide receivers corps for 2020?
1) Robby Anderson (via FA)
2) DeSean Jackson
3) first round pick
4) JJAW
And no Alshon Jeffery/Nelson Agholor.
Excluding tush pushes, Jalen Hurts has had four designed rushes for zero total yards the last three weeks. He’s essentially had to throw to win.
As a thrower the last three weeks? He’s leading the NFL in both TD:INT (8:1) and passer rating (125.5) during that span.
Colin Cowherd on today’s show - speaking about Tom Brady/Bill Belichick - said if you lose a divorce, you immediately hit the gym.
It literally sounds like Colin imitating
@JoeyMulinaro
imitating Colin.
This is why I don't like the
#ringz
argument for QBs. Tom Brady threw for 3 TD, no INT, and led his team to 33 pts last year and doesn't get a ring.
This year? No TD, 1 INT, 13 points. QBs are 5-117 in the playoffs in the SB era when they do what Brady just did.
Malcolm Jenkins is due $10.88M in 2020 with about 60% of that guaranteed.
1) Eagles have lots of cap space
2) Jenkins is really good
3) Jenkins is a leader
4) Jenkins plays multiple positions
5) Jenkins never gets hurt
Give him $12M in 2020 + $11M in 2021, all guaranteed. Easy.
Colin Cowherd said on his show that Philly fans have been telling him for two years that Carson Wentz isn’t the answer and Nick Foles is... That’s one of those incorrect things you can just say as a radio host when you run unopposed.
It’s his free agent year. DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery and Jordan Howard are out today. $9.5M wilde receiver Nelson Agholor has taken this opportunity to have 16 receiving yards today. No one has ever wanted it less in a contract year than Nelson Agholor.
Alshon Jeffery has caught 8.3 percent of contested catch opportunities this year. That's the lowest rate in the NFL. (The average WR catches 40.3 percent). Considering that's literally WHY JEFFERY IS HERE, it's pretty alarming.
The Cincinnati Bengals have had way better QBs than you’d think for a franchise considered a historical laughingstock.
Ken Anderson
Boomer Esiason
Carson Palmer
Andy Dalton
Joe Burrow
Jerry Rice had more receiving yards AFTER tearing his ACL and cracking his kneecap at age 35 (6,440) than Hall of Famer Julian Edelman has in his career (5,390).
Jalen Hurts’ first NFL start will be as tough as it gets. He plays a Saints D with the following ranks over the last 5 games:
1st - points
1st - yards/play
1st - takeaways
1st - total TDs
1st - comp%
1st - passer rating
1st - passing TDs
1st - rushing YPC
1st - rushing TDs
In a ‘down game’, Jalen Hurts accounted for three total TDs, led his team to 34 offensive points, and posted a 147.7 passer rating in the second half.
No preseason. Just shaking off some rust. He’ll be fine. Eagles 2-0.
Alshon Jeffery will probably never make a Pro Bowl with the Eagles but his value is so much more than the numbers. Every time I watch him make a catch, it looks like a man playing among boys.
Nelson Agholor is the only wide receiver I’ve ever seen in my life who makes absolutely no attempt to dive on a deep ball. He watches it. He doesn’t dive. He barely extends his arms. He couldn’t possibly be less interested in catching the ball. It’s an absolute disgrace to watch.
I'd still like to have DeSean Jackson back in 2020. How could I not? He has a history of missing about two games a year, not 15. And with what he provides to this offense, I'll take the risk easily.
#Eagles
Carson Wentz’s 2018 struggles have been drastically overstated. He put up a 102 passer rating coming off a torn ACL and with a broken back. He’s not the first great QB to struggle early with injuries. He will be tremendous for the next 10 years.
#FlyEaglesFly
Carson Wentz just posted the highest completion percentage (77.5) in Eagles history for a QB who threw at least 40 passes. Given the accuracy issues he’s had this year, the fact that GREG WARD was his No. 1 WR, and that it was a must-win game vs. Dallas... I say that’s good work.
Despite missing his No. 1 WR, Carson Wentz threw three TD passes in a must-win primetime game against a defense that entered the day first in the NFC in sacks and passer rating allowed. He wasn’t intercepted, didn’t fumble, and wasn’t sacked.
#Eagles
I still can't believe how much fun that Super Bowl was. The pass to Jeffery. The absolute dime to Clement. The Philly Special. Zach Ertz's game-winner. Brandon Graham's strip sack. Brady's drop. Nick Foles' dominance. Dethroning the dynasty. Kelce's speech. I just love this team.
I don't want to take anything away from New England, but this was more Jared Goff goofing it up for 60 minutes. That back foot INT he threw late in the game was beyond putrid. The sacks he took were worse than anything I've ever seen.
The ageless/future HOFer Jason Peters is PFF’s second-highest rated OT. Played every snap and didn’t allow a QB hurry. Not bad for someone who is 37 years old.
QBs with a higher comp%, greater TD:INT ratio, and higher passer rating than 2018 Carson Wentz:
2018/2011/2009 Brees
2018/2016 Ryan
2014 Romo
1994 Young
If Wentz can do that and have a ‘bad year’, then he’s pretty good. Give him an offseason to heal. He’ll be fine.
Jim Brown led the NFL in rushing yards in eight of his nine seasons, won three MVPs, never missed a game, and then went to Hollywood. He can read the draft card however he wants.
Literally never been so proud of Carson Wentz in my life. He just led two TD drives with the game on the line throwing to the likes of Boston Scott, Greg Ward, JJAW, and something named Joshua Perkins. That's our QB.
Worst Philly injuries (updated):
McNabb broken ankle 2002
TO broken leg 2004
McNabb sports hernia 2005
McNabb torn ACL 2006
Howard torn Achilles 2011
Maclin torn ACL 2012
Peters torn Achilles 2012
Wentz torn ACL 2017
Peters torn ACL 2017
Wentz back 2018
McCutchen torn ACL 2019
Something to think about: Is Malcolm Jenkins the greatest free agent signing in
#Eagles
history? He’s never missed a game in five years. Plays S and CB as needed. Two-time Pro Bowler. Super Bowl champ. Undisputed leader of defense and maybe the whole team.
Here’s another way to phrase it: The
#Eagles
are now 7-7 in the last 14 games in which Carson Wentz has led the team to 20+ points. This glaring lack of a defense is wasting the prime years of a HOF-caliber quarterback’s career.
JJAW added to the injury report, which means he likely won’t play. Greg Ward and Robert Davis are your healthy wide receivers for a win-or-go-home game against Dallas.
@evansilva
Jerry Rice is the only WR in NFL history to catch a pass at age 40 - and he caught 90/1,211/7 and then scored in the Super Bowl. He played 17 games at age 42. He’s the GOAT and it’s not even close. He may be the greatest athlete who ever lived. And this isn’t a knock on A.Brown.
Throws by Eagles QBs I can remember being better than that:
1) Foles to Clement back of the end zone (2017 Super Bowl)
2) Vick to Celek threaded between defenders (2010 CHI)
3) Wentz to Clement when he was falling backwards (2017 WAS)
That’s it.
What am I missing?
The NFL basically pretended the Jadeveon Clowney illegal hit on Carson Wentz never happened. Everyone from the broadcasters to Michelle Tafoya after the game to the lack of fine handed down. It literally adds insult to injury.
In 25 years of
@pfref
’s Game Play Finder, this was first time ever a QB threw a come-from-behind GW TD pass in the playoffs on 4th down w <1 min left in 4Q. And Nick Foles did it vs.
#1
D in NFL. It’s just what he does. He wins football games.
#Eagles
In order to get Jalen Ramsey, you’d likely have to give up a 1 and a 2 - AND sign him to a long-term deal probably guaranteeing him $20M per year through 2022 - and I would do that. He’s a rare/special corner,
#Eagles
are in win-now mode, and their current CBs aren’t good enough.
Vikings fans have been dealt so much abuse from Philly - the Bradford trade, last year’s NFCCG debacle, and Week 17 this year - that I wonder if they’re literally rooting for their division rival in this upcoming playoff game.
In 28 years as an
#Eagles
fan, the three loudest times I’ve ever screamed:
1) DeSean’s punt return
2) Philly Special
3) Brandon Graham’s sack fumble
#FlyEaglesFly
Jared Goff puts up worse numbers than Carson Wentz on a more expensive contract with a better running back, much much better wide receivers, and a better offensive-minded head coach.
Players who have likely played their last down with the
#Eagles
:
Alshon Jeffery
Jason Peters
Darren Sproles
Jordan Howard
Nelson Agholor
Josh McCown
Ronald Darby
Nigel Bradham
Anyone else?
PFF has charged all four Eagles cornerbacks (Darby/S.Jones/Maddox/Douglas) with allowing a 100+ passer rating this season. You can’t win with this current group.
@ProFootballTalk
Well no. Super Bowl trophies are based off of one year. There’s no requirement you have to be good three years later. Good tweet though.
In 2 games since taking over as the starting LT, Jordan Mailata is PFF’s No. 3 overall rated OT, and he’s one of just two OTs to rank in the top 10 as both a pass blocker and run blocker. No sacks allowed. What a find.
