They are being well fed, and were allowed to buy SIM cards to report back to relatives. The conditions around the detention center are the roughest, though: extreme 35C/100F heat, 100% Humidity, no fans, and limited bottled water ( I have assured them our tap water is safe).

Despite being asylum seekers, their application was denied before any interviews. Judging by this poster, we are hosting people from Uzbekistan, Turkey, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iran, Russia, and Azerbaijan. I am in contact with people from the latter two countries.

Many of them were held at the US border for weeks in very poor conditions: underfed and in cold cells. There are a lot of families, and according to local press, almost 50% of the detainees are children.

In many ways, they are being treated as prisoners when, in theory, they are refugees. Thanks to that clever sign trick (courtesy of the @nytimes), we managed to establish contact and exchange phone numbers before the police asked us to leave.
