i'd like this genre to come back and be more about an author's own liminal spaces. i cleaned the house of a friend's dead mom recently. i remember visiting a home of a christian family and their daughter's room only had a bible and a mattress. my middle school no longer exists.

but on an unrelated note, this general genre of games & content i feel like died because everyone was just remaking the same few liminal space pictures. doing those pool rooms or the same hotel or the same yellowing carpet got stale really quickly.

they're genuinely at their best when you can wander and sometimes you hear something, but when you turn around, there's nothing. or if you do see something, it's a shadow. it does not harm you, and it disappears with the brightening of the lights.

it's really what makes a lot of backrooms/liminal space games hard to pull off. they need to be mostly walking sims (which a lot of people don't like), and i think part of what you need is to be able to *feel* the space. the smell of wet carpet. the peeling paper on the walls.

what makes backrooms/liminal spaces horrifying is the oppressive nature of the space ans your mind's perception of it from nostalgia. how it contorts and teists between seemingly-impossible spaces. it is the suspense of something being there and nothing appearing.

but yeah it's just really insulting considering i'm an artist. why would i want work not done by other artists.

had a moment with my mother today telling her i didn't want to use AI generated wallpaper and she said "how else would they make it?" implying that human beings cannot and, for centuries, have not drawn their own wallpaper.

anyways this is specifically about home decor and how lots of wallpapers i am finding are just straight up AI slop and it's difficult to find anything that isn't.
