On Friday, 3 Korean women were shot in a hate-motivated gun shooting.
On Saturday, 10 Black people were shot in a hate-motivated gun shooting.
To live in this country is to be in constant mourning.

Hope Kissinger's death shed light on how many genocides this country engineered in Asia and Latin America during the Cold War because most Americans have no fucking clue.
It is time for everyone, not just Asian Americans yelling into the void, to help put a stop to these anti-Asian hate crimes. Enough already. We need your support. Please. This is horrible.
#atlantaspa
we discuss and vote as if we live in a democracy but it's not. We live in a necropolitical society and it's time we radicalize ourselves to face it as such.
while CNN and NYT are going out of their way interviewing students who feel "uncomfortable" at Columbia, 4,327 students and 231 teachers and administrators have been murdered in Palestine.
In talking about anti-Asian racism, you have to dig deeper than model minority micoaggressions to the neocolonial wars abroad when Asians were deemed dirty, inhuman & their lives disposable. You cannot talk about racialization of Asians without talking about American imperialism.
Not a single winner at the Golden Globes said anything about the ongoing genocide because of what it would do to their career. Compare that to a few yrs ago where stars only spoke out against the Ukrainian invasion but Zelensky himself made an appearance
Minor Feelings has been optioned for a TV show! With the brilliant & badass Greta Lee starring & writing & A24😍 producing. I can’t believe this is my life.
Covid is exposing the lie that most Asian Americans have white collar jobs. Many are in the service industry which means no fixed income, no job security, no healthcare
The jobless rate for
#AsianAmericans
is higher than that of whites & Latinos at 10.7%, up from 2.8% a year ago.
#COVID19
is having a devastating economic impact on AsianAms, nearly quarter of whom work in industries such as restaurants, retail & personal svcs such as nail salons
Asian Americans must choose a side: do you want to be stooges to white supremacy for your own cowardly gain or do you want to be on the right side of history and fight for social justice?

Been amplifying the CONTINUED anti-Asian hate when I speak in public and no one who's NOT Asian wants to hear about it & I get it, there are enough problems, but guess what, it's STILL HAPPENING--grown men are bludgeoning frail elderly Asian women. It's fucking sick.
Asians are successful because our cultures tend to value family and education.
It's not because white people treat us better as pet minorities or some other garbage.
It's freaking ridiculous that I even need to explain this.
Large private colleges are seeing a major increase in the number of first-generation applicants, low-income applicants and applicants of color after these colleges made standardized test optional this year. Standardized tests are barriers.
I refuse to have
@AndrewYang
be my AAPI spokesman. He's the one who said that AAPI needs to try harder to be American and that we are spending too much time on identity politics. When it comes to race in America, he's clueless.
I want to hear their names and I want their names amplified. Because right now these victims of anti-Asian hate are just treated as a statistic that will soon be forgotten.
We are in a post-democracy. Yes vote but the system is so that one of our votes is worth three of theirs. Including boycotting, striking, we must embrace activism and literature that address our post-democracy.
Me: I'm sad.
Five year old daughter: Why?
Me: I'm afraid no one's going to read my book.
Five year old daughter: (sighs dramatically) we already talked about this...
We're witnessing a mass slaughter of Palestinians that has so far surpassed the deaths in Ukraine *in 3 weeks.* There is footage of crying children buried under rubble. This should not be a debate. It’s *human decency* to demand a cease fire.
Warren is so clearly the best candidate but the sexism in this country is so unyielding, so bone-deep, that they'd rather have a 37 yr old rookie mayor than a woman who has the brilliance, wisdom, and experience to undo Trump's toxic legacy.
I beg everyone in media and this includes Asians in media to keep paying attention to the systemic roots of this anti-Asian hate, to not dismiss it as overblown when there is a lull.
I am a diehard Warren fan but no matter who wins—even if it’s Biden—I’m going to canvas my ass off. For those who opted out in 2016, we got Kavanaugh, Gorsich, vulnerable people endangered, & the gutting of EPA. It’s gross privilege to opt out.
This is why speaking in the same language as the victims and being culturally sensitive are essential for journalists to get the story right. From day 1, Korean newspapers were able to get facts from victims whereas national news went straight to the police.
"Korean-language local media outlets including Atlanta K, the Korea Times Atlanta, and Korea Daily were uniquely positioned to cover the shooting."

Do you have favorite Asian American short stories or personal essays that you love to teach to undergrads (or wished that it was taught to you as an undergrad?)
Asian American identity is being hijacked by a white supremacist agenda to end affirmative action. The majority supports Affirmative action and it’s the elite minority of AAPI who are against it. The decision seems all but inevitable but AAPI still have to speak out against it!
thinking about the unspoken violence against Asian sex workers not just here but abroad in Korea servicing the American occupation. Misogyny & violence against AAPI women comes from domestic racism and from American imperial wars abroad. Don't forget that.
*Everyone* should read this book. News isn’t new but the way
@Vinncent
Bevins sums up how US used its anti-communist agenda to obstruct all decolonization attempts by the Global South should shatter the way we look at the Cold War entirely. Had me in tears at points.
Golden Globes is basically saying that any immigrant story--where kids & parents speak to each other in a language other than English--is un-American.

will be in conversation with me NEXT WEEK (More details TBA)
Love u all for your incredible support for Minor Feelings. Despite this s*itshow of a year, I'm a lucky woman.
There's going to be a Korean translation of Minor Feelings! I was curious how the publisher was going to translate the title, and I just found out that the translation is this:
마이너 피링스
No more stories about the economic woes of the white working class.They're racist. Period. Focus on Black women who delivered votes, Muslims who delivered votes, young AAPI who are fastest growing & overwhelmingly LEFT & the heterogeneity of Latinx voters.
Seeing Poland and Romania welcome Ukrainians should have us seriously reflect on our own refugee policy and how we need to be more generous with those fleeing from wars that we directly—and indirectly—created.
My brilliant friend Eli, who gave me the gift of Minor Feelings by
@cathyparkhong
, brought her homemade sign with a quote from the same book tonight to
#BreakTheSilence
& of all the people in the crowd we find ourselves next to the writer herself❤️🔥
If you are not white, you aren’t safe. No matter how rich you are, you will be the object of America’s contempt. Right now it’s the Asian body, seen as pestilence and invasion, who triggers this contempt that will only fade when it moves onto another target.
the traumatic stories of transracial adoption have been totally erased from the Allen/Farrow annals. I believe Dylan but her story's not the only tragedy in this mess.
talk about the Hmongs being abandoned after being used by Americans; the colonization of the Phillipines; "gook" was invented during the Korean war; Koreans were called the n**** of Asia during that time.
I’m getting exhausted by the hate against Asians. I feel that we are very alone right now. This model minority myth engineered by whites has been horribly damaging, estranging us from all sides.
When Fred Trump had dementia, he insisted on still working. His family made a fake office for him to trick him into believing he was still boss.
A fake oval office should be made for Donald T so he can believe he's still president.
Also that fake oval office should be in jail.
I was a beneficiary for affirmative action. So many of us were and still are. 69% of AAPI support affirmative action. Among those who don't--and who get outsized press--are upper-middle class first gen East Asians.
Hope we can turn our grief into action and continue to have a growing AAPI radical tradition that’s intersectional & coalitional, that is for prison abolition and anti-capitalist, and focuses on the unseen low-wage workers among us.
I hope that we give respect to an older generation of Asian American poets, like Myung Mi Kim, John Yau, Marilyn Chin, who were writing when no one was giving Asians the time of day, poets who paved the way to the renaissance today....
We need people from all communities decrying anti-Asian hate because this is going to create deep fissures that will be exploited by those in power where social justice is the last thing on their minds
Ok, can I brag about fan mail just this one time? *Robin D.G. Kelley* (if you don't know him, you should. trust me) just wrote me a fan mail saying Minor Feelings is one of the greatest books of the 21st Century. My. jaw. has. dropped. I can die happy now.
The pattern of students, editors, scholars and writers getting doxxed and fired for their support for Palestine by the very same liberals who support free speech is truly disturbing and must be condemned.
I was asked by two different media sources for AAPI recommendations and they keep not getting published and my little list includes poetry which is not getting enough love when AAPI poetry is where it’s at! 1/7
Poetry's having a renaissance and
@nytimesbooks
is missing this era by only adding 3 poetry books to its 100 notable books. More Poetry & POC critics, please.
What is your favorite personal essay on the Asian American condition? Collecting a list of essays for future courses and want to make sure I haven't missed any essays beloved by you. Esp looking for work that sparks discussion (& on S.East & S. Asian identity)
More Latinx voices in the newsrooms. More Asians. They are badly understood or ignored. Americans have no idea how conflicted and contradictory nonblack POC politics are. They will determine future elections & we cannot have POC moving towards the right.
rereading Alice Notley's Poetics of Disobedience for class which reaffirms my belief that once female writers and artists hit 50, they just don't give two fucks what anyone thinks they should do. And that's when they are at their full genius.
It may not matter much because she lives in California but my 70 yr old mother, who has never voted in her 46 years living in the US, registered for the first time in 2020 to vote for Biden.
A Filipina woman was cruelly beaten.
1/3 of nurses who died from Covid were Filipino despite being only 4% of the work force. 200,000 Filipinos died in the American takeover of the nation & Filipina women were brutalized & forced into prostitution.
murders of black men will never end because the police is built as a white supremacist organization formed to protect power and property. The only solution is to defund it.
I wrote about Cathy Park Hong's new essay collection Minor Feelings, which is brutal and brilliant and the most vital, challenging thing about Asian-American identity I've read in some time
Remember in early spring when none of us wore masks? My cousin told me that Koreans thought Americans were the stupidest people ever for not wearing masks. Can we stop treating Asians as cyborgs & learn from the way they handled Covid-19 already?
fun fact: after Korea was *finally* liberated from Japanese colonizers, the US built Japanese economy back up by producing napalm that was then used to bomb Korea flat during the Korean war.
AAPI against affirmative action need to take an ethnic studies course. AAPI benefitted from every right civil right activists fought for. If you came after 1965, your ass wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for activities who made the US aware of its racist immigration policy. SMH
any great kids chapter books with Asian American protagonists--like adventure books and not just "this is how my family celebrates Chinese New Year" kind of books?
One Takeaway: Dems didn’t do enough to reach out to Latinx and Asians. The fear of socialism is huge among immigrants who escaped communism and from what I observed, there was a lot of disinformation of Biden as a socialist.
Sigh: I don’t want Andrew Yang as my mayor and will likely vote for Maya Wiley. But can we stop with the “Andrew Yang is not a real New Yorker?” That just hits a little too close to “Asians are not real Americans” kinda thinking okay?
First racist goodreads review! "Reading Minor Feelings, I detect a distinctly Korean voice. Hong demonstrates none of the toughness of the Chinese or the stoicism of the Japanese, nor the optimism of European-Americans.This book is fatalistic, mawkish, and myopic." 😂😂😂
South Korea has the worst score for gender equity in the world and the president elect Yoon said there is no gender discrimination in Korea. Support is with all the Korean women who fought so hard against their nation’s rape culture. Your fight will not be in vain.
Fake news is the other virus that’s getting worse infiltrating not just white GOP but local ethnic media that feeds immigrant communities. Just lectured my mom for an hour clearing up the lies she’s hearing. It is everywhere.
I'm thrilled to announce that my collection of essays, STAND UP, will be published by ONE WORLD/RANDOM HOUSE in SPRING 2020! I've been toiling away at this book for the last few years so I'm so grateful to be part of this brilliant imprint.
My 65 year old mother-in-law was fired from her company in Texas because she refused to break shelter in place and work in an office for 8 hours a day.
I fully support the New School strike. I was paid 4,000 to adjunct at
@EugeneLang
where the dean screamed at me for not teaching my class the way he ordered me to like I was his servant. No one should be treated the way New School treats its employees.
Husband to daughter: today is Santa Con. Do not interact with anyone dressed as Santa today. Don’t go anywhere near them. They will be drunk and rude and puke everywhere. None of them are the real Santa. They are just gross adults
