That’s my spiel for today. Hopefully my new treatments work so I revert back to episodic. But also check out @Beth_Morton & I’s work on why we think we should look beyond the episodic vs chronic migraine distinction (Presented at #AHSAM 2024) https://t.co/POvqg4Ixx0 8/

And, as @JoannaKempner (2014) said, it allows me to use my body as a ā€œfield note,ā€ or in dialog with my research process. This also makes me think about @AHDAorg ’s recent webinar on patient researchers and the huge benefit of community engaged research more generally. 7/

When I’m informed on the nuances of these labels it helps me 1) ask better questions in interviews, and also, 2) appreciate the complexity of the healthcare landscape that people with migraine must traverse (that surely only perpetuates inequality). 6/

As I interview ppl w/ migraine about their experiences, relationships, and identities, I keep thinking about how the diagnoses and labels that we use can be a big part of how ppl make sense of everything. It’s helpful as a scholar to have a better understanding of these labels.5/

These are two examples of things about classifying, labeling, and measuring migraine I would not have known if I were not also a migraine patient myself. 4/

I also learned if there’s not 24 hours between attacks, it is the same attack. I often get a migraine in the afternoon that lasts until I go to bed. Meds and sleep may help, but I might then develop a migraine the next afternoon. This is technically 1 attack that lasts 2 days. 3/

To start, I was under the assumption intractable chronic migraine meant daily unremitting pain. For some this is true (or maybe that’s chronic intractable migraine?) but it also means 15+ headache days per month with attacks that don’t remit for more than 72 hours (that’s me). 2/

I keep finding advantages of studying something I experience. My diss explores social networks, identities, and wellbeing among ppl w/ migraine. On Monday, I got a dx of intractable chronic migraine after being high frequency episodic for 10 years. Why is this helpful? 1/
