We’re going on tour! Ahead of the 2024 election, Capital B’s Black Political Power Tour will be visiting key battleground states to provide Black voters the information they need in the lead up to this year’s elections. Learn more now:
1/9 BREAKING:
@margoasnipe
here. The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a decision that will limit abortion access and potentially exacerbate racial disparities in births. The impacts will fall disproportionately on Black women, who make up about 1/3 of abortions nationwide.
The mother of environmental justice was a Black woman from the South Side of Chicago. An audio docuseries is bringing her story to new generations of activists.
5/9 It may also worsen the maternal mortality crisis. Black women are at least 3 times as likely as white women to die from pregnancy-related causes, according to CDC data.
Jada Johnson, 22, was a young mother whose life was tragically cut short when a Fayetteville, North Carolina, police officer shot her 17 times in the back. She died in front of her 2-year-old daughter and grandparents. Her grandfather spoke to Capital B:
3/9 The rate of abortions among Black women is more than 3x that of white women. The trend, experts say, is driven largely by structural issues that contribute to unplanned pregnancies, including limited access to comprehensive sex ed, health care and adequate insurance coverage.
The chronic stress of racism is slowly eroding at Black America’s health like a rock being battered by the outdoor elements, surviving the storms as the force repeatedly chips away at its strength. Here’s how.
The University of Florida’s African American Studies program is one of its “fastest growing majors.” But the current government rejected an AP course for high schoolers on the same subject.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley is reintroducing the Ending PUSHOUT Act to address the school-to-prison pipeline. Studies show that Black girl students are disproportionately expelled and suspended compared with their white girl classmates.
Three-time Olympic champion Tori Bowie’s death from childbirth complications underscores the alarming reality that Black women are more likely to face the worst pregnancy-related outcomes in the U.S., regardless of socioeconomic status.
4/9 Maternal health advocates and legal experts are concerned limited abortion access will have wide-ranging health and criminal justice implications, fearing those who seek them out will be disproportionately criminalized and increasingly at risk of negative health outcomes.

6/9 It’s now up to individual states to allow, restrict, or deny abortion access altogether. More than a dozen have “trigger laws” that now automatically ban abortion with Roe overturned. Many are Southern states where Black women are also disproportionately likely to live.
2/9 The opinion, released Friday morning, solidified a leaked 98-page draft opinion obtained by Politico in May. The document raised alarms that the court would strike down the 1973 Roe ruling, which guaranteed the constitutional right to an abortion, this summer.
Louisiana is one of 11 states that elects officials to regulate energy companies. In a Q&A, Davante Lewis, the state’s new regulator and first Black LGBTQ elected official, explained his clean energy vision to protect Louisiana’s environment and residents.
Today there was another reported bomb threat at Spelman College, part of a wave of threats targeting numerous HBCU’s this month.
@kenyathehunter
looks at how these threats highlight the long history of obstructing Black people’s access to knowledge.
7/9 Black Americans’ views on abortion access have shifted over the years. Now, according to the Pew Research Center, about two-thirds of Black adults believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases.

U.S. energy companies are doubling down on the use of natural gas. In Brooklyn, Black elders are fighting back. “Help us put solar panels on the roofs, give us windmills — let us be self-sustaining, so we don’t have to depend on their gas and oil.”
Hi, national health reporter
@margoasnipe
here. I’ve spent a year investigating how Georgia’s maternal care system is failing Black residents and found that the state’s rural Black communities have been ignored for decades, making deliveries dangerous.
Activists say they’ve organized a campaign resulting in more than 1,250 ethics complaints filed by Minneapolis residents against the mayor related to the handling of the Locke shooting.
During our launch event, we hosted a panel about eviction. U.S. Rep

Some Black communities argue the dollar stores (Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar) stifle economic growth and job creation, and exacerbate food insecurity.

“Racism is foundational in our nation’s history, and yet many people are in staunch denial of its continued existence and profoundly negative impacts on the health and well-being of our nation,” said Dr. Camara Jones.

here. We’re working on a story to help those struggling with the decision to watch Tyre Nichols' assault when it’s posted. Before we get back to work, we have two things to share:
First, it's OK not to watch.
Black children are three times more likely than white children to have elevated blood lead levels because of deteriorating water systems in their communities.
A 36-year-old white man was arrested for killing a 13-year-old Black child in Columbus, OH. After he told the police he shot Sinzae Reed in self-defense, the charges against him were dismissed. Months later, the shooter remains free.
Black women had the largest increase in maternal mortality from 2020 to 2021, and their death rate due to pregnancy-related causes was nearly three times higher than that of white women. Experts say they are not surprised.

Eight years after the crisis first gained national attention, there are still homes in Flint, MI, without access to clean drinking water. What does this mean for communities in the majority-Black city?
Viola Fletcher, known affectionately by her community and family as “Mother Fletcher,” might have only been 7 years old the night the attack on Greenwood began, but she remembers everything.

Roughly 80% of Black Americans across the country have been exposed to extreme heat, according to Capital B’s analysis of the heat index, a measure that combines air temperature with humidity to provide a number for what the temperature feels like.
For nearly a decade, Black residents in Flint, Michigan, have struggled through a water crisis that experts have attributed to ineptitude by former Gov. Rick Snyder and several other officials. Today, the state AG office officially dropped its investigation of those officials. 🧵

Experts have been saying for years that it's all connected.
Brittany Martin is serving a four year prison sentence for comments she made during a protest in 2020. She's endured unthinkable atrocities while incarcerated, including sexual assault, giving birth while incarcerated, and forcibly having her hair cut off.
Join us for “The Power of Black Stories,” our two-day launch event, where we’ll discuss the impact of Black narratives in policy, activism, and entertainment.
Capital B traveled to Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee to talk to Black residents about the impact of the water crisis. These are their stories:

No charges were filed against officers who shot Jada Johnson 17 times in her own home, killing the young mother. In cases like Johnson’s, it’s rare to see officers face accountability. Here’s why:
Hi,

here. In June, I wrote about Josephine Wright, a 93-year-old who faced alleged intimidation and a lawsuit for not selling her land.
Now, Tyler Perry is working to build her a 5-bedroom home, according to her granddaughter.
On Thursday, Biden announced that two-time Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner was on her way home. Black queer folks have been leading the advocacy for Griner's release since the news of her detention broke earlier this year.
