February's orchestration exercise, "Icy Fjords", is now complete. Inspired by the prompt and images below, it evokes icy waters, swirling mists, melancholy isolation, and majestic towering heights (or so I hope). Lasts 4:20. #Orchestration2026

Grok's prompt for February: Icy Coastal Fjords. Here's the description, and some of the generated images I used as inspiration. I almost finished the composition yesterday, but there's still a few things I'll need to touch up before I consider it finished.

It's in G minor (occasionally tends to G dorian) and the scoring is purposefully limited to strings, woodwinds, and piano (no brass, percussion, or harp). The mockup leaves quite a bit to be desired, but I'm relearning how to do everything while also using Linux & on a deadline.

Occasionally I dabble in music composition & orchestration. To gain practice, at the start of Feb. I challenged myself to create one short piece a month for a year, so I had grok come up with 12 evocative landscape descriptions, then I generated images to use as visual prompts.

I missed January, so I'll have to come back to it at the end. Also, I'm just an amateur, and these are explicitly meant as practice pieces.

We'll see how long this actually lasts (esp. in the busy Fall) but the goal is to have 30-45 minutes of music after a year. Originally I'd thought of trying for an hour, w\ each piece ~5 minutes. But that's actually pretty long, so realistically it'll probably be shorter.

While Jeffro was making his grand comeback on @DunderMoose last night and being told ApxN wasn't very useful, @MythicMLand was hosting a book club on Dunsany's King of Elflands Daughter, discussing how its sense of enchantment is crucial to the game:

I asked @Grok Imagine to make a trailer for the most insane, pulpy, incredible 1980s sword-and-sorcery movie that should’ve existed but never did. Grok did not disappoint. Here is SWORDBOW.

I had grok generate some VTT portraits for my solo ACKS campaign, though I had to make multiple attempts and stitch together the best 2 results in GIMP. Chadonius (Fighter), Radnor (Berserk Fighter), Jelyssa (Thief), Marzipan (Elven Illusionist), and Edelweiss (Halfling Scout)
