I'm going to this for sure, and you should too. Helen is such a treasured voice, and has been a lovely interlocutor in my work on Audre Lorde.
I'm breaking my Twitter fast to share this for friends and admirers of Helen De Cruz (formerly @helenreflects on here). She been a shining light in our field for so long. This looks like a wonderful way to celebrate her life.

Excited to hear and support this research!! We need more complex, multi-directional analysis of Black feminist left internationalism, anti colonial struggles, and their legacies.
On the way to Hamburg to present our work with @DurdiyevaSelbi, taking a look at Angela Davis’ approach to the USSR from the perspectives of societies affected by russian-soviet imperialism. Our paper calls for epistemic reparations and opens complex debates that we need to have

Note that the threat of the midnight knock isn't merely a rhetorical flourish for Lorde. In her early 20s under McCarthyism, her roommate’s mother was deported to Poland bc she had been in the Communist Party & FBI came knocking at Lorde’s door in 1957. Lorde was 23.

When Audre Lorde visited Ghana w/kids & partner Frances, everyone treated her as the maid bc Frances was white. Frances's solution: serve Audre whenever in public—light her cigs, hold open doors for her to sail thru, etc., and ppl went 🤯 thinking the white woman was the maid.
