I am so sad.
The argument that the elderly and weak may just have to die to enrich the young and strong — painted as some sort of sacrifice, rather than a horrific outcome that we should fight against — is so bleak and hopeless.
Lord, change hearts. Lord, protect the weak.
JUST NOW: The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passes the UIGHUR Act, a bill to condemn the Chinese government for its mass internment of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang, with a vote of 406-1.
Stop talking about a “final straw.”
This president endorsed a credibly accused child molester for the Senate.
He defended racists and neo-Nazis after Charlottesville.
His decision to cozy up to a murderous dictator isn’t a surprise to Republican lawmakers. They know who he is.
I ask Ted Cruz if he agrees with Trump that the president can pardon himself. Cruz is silent for eighteen (18!) seconds before telling reporters it’s not a constitutional area he’s studied.
Everything about this video of my dog — zipped into my dad’s hoodie and howling along to a string quartet cover of a U2 song — that my brother sent me this morning is amazing
My Papa passed away from Covid-19 complications last night. We‘re heartbroken. I’m so grateful I grew up knowing him. There’s no one quite like Bill Byrd. He blessed us with his strong faith in Christ & his one-of-a-kind sense of humor. Our family will miss him tremendously.
When I went in for my first interview with CNN they asked me what I wanted to cover on Capitol Hill and I said the very exciting stuff like Section 232 tariffs and NAFTA.
And they’re letting me do it!!!
Excited to be joining the team 💫
I am in the wrong here.
AOC gets a lot of undue criticism, and I understand why she was upset by what I said. My tweet comes off as condescending, even if I didn’t mean it that way. And instead of recognizing my mistake when she responded, I was snarky.
I messed up. I’m sorry.
Just to reiterate for members of the press: AOC seems to have had a truly frightening experience on January 6th, but members of the mob did not break into her office. The man she hid from was a Capitol Police officer who told her to go to a different office building.
The House just passed the Emmett Till Antilynching Act, a bill to make lynching a federal crime, with a vote of 410-4.
The members who voted against it:
-Justin Amash
-Thomas Massie
-Louie Gohmert
-Ted Yoho
Post Zelensky speech, GOP Rep. Dan Crenshaw calls idea of ending military aid to Ukraine “absurd” and says America has “made a pretty good investment here”
Texas Republican Will Hurd to CNN's Christiane Amanpour: "Those tweets are racist, and xenophobic... It’s also behavior that’s unbecoming of the leader of the free world. He should be talking about things that unite, not divide us."
A few things.
1. Obviously, the audio speaks for itself.
2. Every reporter who was in that scrum—people who have interacted with Cruz for years—came away from it knowing it was an abnormal response from him.
3. Our story is accurate.
Some dishonest journalists have attacked me for "taking 18 seconds" to answer -- without acknowledging that I was walking through the Capitol, late to a meeting, and simply ignoring a question that a reporter had called out at me (as senators do every single day in the Capitol).
It’s heart-wrenching to see pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong essentially tweeting farewell messages today in anticipation that they may be targeted under the new national security law.
The quality of political journalism would improve tenfold if we all just agreed to ban the words “win” and “lose” (and variations of both) when reporting on policy developments
looking forward to hearing from Republicans in Congress about why it is Actually A Good Thing for the government to spend $12 billion to prop up an industry that is suffering from trade wars sparked by the president's unilaterally imposed tariffs
North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!
The bill would also enable Global Magnitsky Act sanctions on Chinese officials deemed responsible for the concentration camps and require the State Department to assemble a report on human rights abuses in Xinjiang.
The trend among Republican senators: they say they haven’t read the 19-page January 6 bill and keep displaying confusion about how the commission would work. They’re raising fears about things that are largely addressed in the bill.
Two long running, Obama era, investigations of two very popular Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicized charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department. Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time. Good job Jeff......
MURKOWSKI tells me she spoke with Flake before he made his decision in Judiciary committee and they are in agreement. She says she supports having an FBI investigation that is “limited in scope”
Really cool how the president claimed steel and aluminum imports are a national security threat but also he can remove the tariffs for reasons completely unrelated to national security.
It's almost as if the tariffs aren't about national security at all.
Part of the resistance to calling witnesses is purely nihilism: Democrats don’t think anything will change GOP senators’ minds. That’s probably true. But the other side’s intransigence doesn’t mean you’re off the hook for doing due diligence.
Rep. Justin Amash tells me he stepped down from the House Freedom Caucus and the HFC board tonight.
“I have the highest regard for them, and they’re my close friends,” Amash said. “I didn’t want to be a further distraction for the group.”
“One officer has two cracked ribs and two smashed spinal discs. One officer is going to lose his eye, and another was stabbed with a metal fence stake."
Senate Foreign Relations Chair Jim Risch tells me he’ll meet with Mitch McConnell alongside Marco Rubio next week to discuss the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act.
He and Rubio are likely to push McConnell for information about timing for a floor vote.
Statement from Jeremy Adler, Cheney spokesman, in response to McCarthy’s Fox News interview:
“This is about whether the Republican Party is going to perpetuate lies about the 2020 election and attempt to whitewash what happened on Jan 6. Liz will not do that. That is the issue.”
People were lined up around the block half an hour before Justin Amash’s first town hall since becoming the first congressional Republican to say Trump engaged in impeachable conduct.
(Idk why this video is vertical. I tried to take it horizontally. Sorry folks.)
What if instead of punishing DC residents and the countless people who visit here every year because of a complete failure on the part of Capitol Police leadership to adequately act on clear intelligence beforehand, we... didn't?
PERMANENT SECURITY FENCING coming to US Capitol.
New statement from acting US Capitol Police chief: "Vast improvements to the physical security infrastructure must be made to include permanent fencing"
I'm not sure if it's because it happened in a busy news week or if we're all just numbed to what he does, but Trump's tweet complaining about DOJ bringing charges against Republicans should have sparked exponentially more alarm on Capitol Hill than it did.
First, he came for Comey, & they didn’t speak out b/c they were Trump apologists
Then, he came for McCabe, & they didn’t speak out b/c they were Trump apologists
Next, he’ll come for Rosestein & they won’t speak out b/c they’re Trump apologists
Last, he’ll come for Mueller...
.
@mkraju
asked Kevin McCarthy an entirely valid question during his press conference about the GOP effort to overturn the presidential election. McCarthy was patronizing and nonsensically argued that because the challenges were futile, they don't really count.
Good morning I thought you should know that people in sixth century Constantinople used to have political and theological rap battles — sometimes dissing the emperor to his face!! — ALL THE TIME
Justin Amash is very much the kind of person who would make a ton of news by saying the president engaged in impeachable conduct, not go on TV amid a barrage of interview requests over the weekend, and then take time to elaborate on his position to a group of school children
Lindsey Graham is saying he won’t vote for anything Republican leaders need his vote on (spending bills, judicial nominees) until the CIA gives a briefing about the Khashoggi assessment
The lack of transparency from Capitol Police leaders on this is crazy. Congressman Ryan just casually broke this news on a call with press, and he seems uncertain about the details. (So I would urge caution). But clearly we need more information ASAP.
Rep.
@TimRyan
says TWO CAPITOL POLICE OFFICERS have been SUSPENDED, ONE ARRESTED.
SUSPENSIONS:
-Officer who took selfies
-Officer who put on a MAGA hat and took rioters around
Bipartisan group of lawmakers to send letter to NBA commissioner on China, from Reps. Tom Malinowksi, Mike Gallagher, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jim Banks, and Sens. Ben Sasse, Ron Wyden, Tom Cotton, and Ted Cruz
Texas Republican Will Hurd, one of the few Republicans to explicitly condemn Trump’s tweets about progressive women as racist, votes yes on Democratic resolution condemning the remarks
What are our political parties teaching sexual harassment victims? Consequences are for the other party. Evil men can just wait out allegations. The president can endorse a credibly-accused child molester. Partisanship is more important than people.
Sidenote: The two House Republicans who were indicted this month were also the first two members of Congress to endorse Donald Trump's presidential campaign
It's wild to remember while watching this trial that only a handful of Republican senators are willing to consider the case on its merits. For the vast majority of them, none of this matters.
