Someone remind me when I finish
#MysteriousLotusCasebook
#莲花楼 to post my thoughts on the ethno-nationalistic themes in the plot and how that undercurrent promotes CCP narratives of Han supremacy and the homogenization of China
I definitely knew of a few slash fanwriters in various fandoms in the early/mid-2000's who were against actual gay marriage rights bc they thought that real gay men were disgusting. The dreamland of fandom free from racism, misogyny, homo- & transphobia never existed.
10 years ago, fandoms didn't have time for hate and clout. We were too busy finding the right winRAR and HJsplit software to download a DVD rip from a kind local fan and finding the right softsubs made by that ONE fandom translator. You'd be lucky if you can get hardsubs.
If AO3 is the archive of *our* own, we need to have a serious discussion about whether we want fic that reinforces white supremacy on there.
There's a difference between censorship and deciding that nazis need to get the hell out of your party, and we need to have that talk.
The people peddling the "fandom used to be unsullied by racism, misogyny, and homo- & transphobia" are using the same tactics as the alt right when they sell you on a glorified past vision of your society which never existed, or was actively worse than it is today.
One of the largest pushbacks wrt the proposal to AO3 hiring consultants, paying staff and finding a contractor to improve their racism problem is, "But they're a non-profit, where does the $ come from?"
It turns out they have $1.5 MILLION in reserve that they're not using.
So yes. They do have 1.5mil in their reserves which they state can be used to fund the archive for 2-3 years or for large purchases. Again, that’s a large and unusual amount of reserves for a nonprofit to have. Typical nonprofits aim for 3-6 months of operating costs
THIS. Every single time I post about tackling racism in fandom I alwaysget someone in my replies going, "...and the icky sex, right?"
No. FIGHT RACISM. Let people ship things.
Are there people with laundry lists of ~problematic~ content they want to see banned from ao3, making it a sterile wasteland? Yes. But conflating them with people who want sensible improvements (and for ao3/otw to uphold their extant promises) is intellectual laziness.
It was just that those who were subject to it were too scared to speak out, or there was less awareness in general and more folks were unknowingly complicit. There were plenty of fails to go around.
The people selling you this vision are taking a default white-centric standpoint, where any discussion of systemic issues with race, gender, or sexuality in the community are bad because they undermine the mostly white status quo and power dynamics.
The best way to resist is to call out this rose-tinted, made up version of the past out as bullshit, and keep talking about the issues we encounter in fandom. Don't let them make prejudice go away by rewriting history.
Fandom as a queer space did not spring forth fully formed, it was MADE. Be sus of people that tell you otherwise bc that is a tool of disempowerment.
If it did not change in the past it cannot be changed now and we are helpless against the racism and bigotries of modern fandom
A common argument I also see to impede progress on AO3 is that racism is a societal problem, so it's not AO3's place to fix it. This is the wrong argument. The point of reconsidering the TOS or beefing moderation is to *discourage* racism and racist expression ON THE PLATFORM.
I would take with a grain of salt what anybody says and what their agenda is when they accuse others of being "antis" or a "fancops" because those are loaded terms often used to defend racism in fandom and justify harassment of fans pointing out racist behavior.
If you think that victims of racism need to "develop a thicker skin" you're a fucking racist. If you think anybody who advocates for antiracist action should've gotten slapped more as a kid, you're a child-assaulting racist.
#EndOTWRacism
showing fandom's true colors here.
The lack of effectiveness of the AO3 abuse team is so bad that I have seen folks effectively shrug and give up when they are being harassed. They resign themselves to a long wait for a reply, more harassment, and a milquetoast response. The OTW needs to do better.
There is no legal obligation for the AO3 to host everything. That's a policy that they themselves have decided. I get why they've done so, but AO3 continues, in the name of inclusiveness, to ignore hurt and harm done to other fans when hosting anti-black and anti-semitic content.
Deciding that the KKK and Nazis need to get the hell out of your party doesn't automatically mean that the queers need to get out too. We can decide where to draw the line. This isn't an all or nothing, opening the floodgates kind of deal. We can just say "NO KKK and NAZIS".
I have never seen anybody enjoy singing so badly so much as Gong Jun. We have found the antithesis of tune, the opposite of melody, the anti-music. You might be a decent singer, but when you're up there with Gong Jun, he makes *you* forget what a note sounds like.
And bc everybody's knee-jerk reaction is "OMG CENSORSHIP!" let me just reiterate: I am asking AO3 to consider kicking out those Nazi and KKK members from the party they are hosting, because it's making me uncomfortable. In a real life scenario, this is not an unreasonable ask.
Just watched a 5-min gay pride film that Fu Meng-Po #傅孟柏 did in 2012. I'm a little teary, because this hits so close to home as someone who worried about what my parents were ready to accept. ENG SUB included, must watch. 😭🏳️🌈
A word of advice: never show up at a 英雄/武林大会 Heroes Conference if you're in a wuxia. Good things never happen there, regardless of whether you're the Guest of Honor or the Keynote Speaker. Don't go to the pre/post-con workshops, and certainly none of the social activities.
There are currently over 3,000 fics on AO3 with either "End OTW Racism" or "End Racism in the OTW" in their titles.
I am floored, amazed, and hopeful that this will catch the attention of the OTW volunteers and galvanize them to action.
#EndOTWRacism
Finally, stop conflating this issue with anti-ness. Hanging up a "NO KKK OR NAZIS" sign is completely different from the protect-the-children-what-about-morality rightwing mentality the antis have.
FFS how is it not reasonable to ask actual racists/their content to GTFO?
AO3 is extremely opaque when it comes their future financial planning, as well as having any timelines or milestones toward paying their staff or future consultants.
what i am learning from the otw finance committee open chat/q&a today:
- they still have over $1 million usd in budget surplus that has not been allocated for a specific purpose, which would cover at least a year's worth of operating expenses should they stop fundraising
I like this analogy: you are at a party, and there is some lady knitting a swastika. She might be sweet and polite, but she's knitting a swastika. Everybody can see it. This makes people uncomfortable. It is reasonable to ask that the lady and her knitting be removed.
This is the biggest thing that irks me. I often see legitimate criticisms of AO3, and discussions of how to mitigate racism in fandom conflated with the puriteen bad takes. These are NOT THE SAME. The ppl selling you on that are racists who want to maintain the status quo.
(Are there puritanical censorious antis out there attacking people over harmless shit? Yes. But they don't have the institutional power that we have built for ourselves in fanspaces over the years, & they are NOT the same as fen of color making reasonable requests.)
I think the AO3 DDoS attack just pushes home the point that maybe the OTW needs some paid positions to support infrastructure, so we aren't reliant on volunteers all the goddamn time
Rahaeli just going out on main and showing her entire white ass trying to discredit
#EndOTWRacism
bc "they quoted Stitch so they cannot be trusted". The co-founder of DW just looking for any reason to excuse and ignore the issues of racism and white supremacy in fandom. 🙄🙄🙄
It is telling that the OTW releases a statement right after there is truth being shared about a white candidate, but they did nothing when worse racist lies were spread about Tiffany last year. The OTW brass only care about white fans, while they throw POC under the bus.
They've proven they can move quickly *when they want to*, but the fact the OTW hasn't made an official statement acknowledging their lack of action and pledging to do better sends a signal they don't care about their POC fans. That's why the current
#EndOTWRacism
is so necessary
The backlash they got after the AI interview prompted a quick response from OTW
I hope that the response from fans looking for some action after the promises made 3 years ago will be just as quick. It shouldn't take this long to hire a diversity consultant!
#EndOTWRacism
I have been given permission by Tann to repost this publicly with attribution. It's time the record was set straight regarding this whole JD Nazi Omegaverse fic bc they've twisted the narrative toward their own ends and that's not right.
ive seen so much backlash over
#EndOTWRacism
which shouldnt surprise me (also majority of this comes from tumblr is also to be expected) but most if not all backlash received by this event is done is such bad faith and complete wilful ignorance
Maybe we can strike a compromise where the lady stays, but we toss her swastika out the window. Maybe she can knit flowery hats instead. But the point is, that swastika is uncool and needs to go, because it's freaking out the other ppl at the party, and we care about each other.
Kutti has edited her post to add a touching personal account from OTW Board Candidate Zixin on the potential sacrifices and risks that Mainland Chinese OTW volunteers run. Please read (scroll toward end of post):
It's not unreasonable to ask the OTW for more transparency and clarity on how it's going to spend the fans' hard earned money. Some folks don't care, that's fine, but don't harass the people who do and want to hold the org accountable for the things they said they were gonna do.
The sluggish torpor with which the OTW had been moving on its anti-racism commitments must end. It's been 3 years, and they've hardly done anything. This delay is unconscionable. Join in from May 17-31 to call attention to the need to

LMFAO anybody who writes a 10k screed and then posts it up on AO3 about how they're not racist is definitely telling on themselves that they're a racist
If you have any naivete left about fandom not being racist, what happened on Reddit should be the final nail in that coffin. Recognize that many fandom spaces refuse to acknowledge fandom racism and the impact of it on POC fans.
#EndOTWRacism
is necessary to platform change.
This is awful. A fan of color talking on reddit about
#EndOTWRacism
, with the permission of the subreddit mods, later gets silenced by the same mods for naming that the subreddit was not a safe place for people of color
But one thing is for sure: their lack of movement on the racism, harassment & abuse issues aren't due to a lack of funds. They are coming out the ears with money. It's due to mismanagement, and at this point, I may conclude even a possibly malicious resistance to change.

Good news from the hospital, the surgery was successful! Naye is now recovering in the surgical ward. I cannot visit her tonight, but if all goes well, I can pop into the hospital tomorrow.
Thanks everyone for your well wishes and good vibes! 🙏💙

I'd like to ask why ppl have reached out Rahaeli re: stitch when the original ask was for OTW organizational failures. Stitch is neither part of OTW nor
#EndOTWRacism
.
*gasp* Is it possible the ppl who contacted Rahaeli had an AGENDA? 😱
These people are among the many, many people who reached out to me after I posted my offer a few weeks ago to work with people who were affected by the ongoing organizational failures of the OTW that have fostered a cultural of organizational racism.
Fandom is one of the few places where they don't even pay lip service to being anti-racist. What if some giant megacorp went on Twitter and said, "Well, racism is the price you pay for (thing)," and decided they weren't going to anything about it? They would be dragged for DAYS.
Every time there is something controversial in c-fandom, where people of Chinese descent raise concerns, we are characterized as an angry yellow mob. If you buy into that story, that's your choice, but know that it comes from a deeply embedded set of racist narratives.
once again, it’s going around that Chinese/Chinese diaspora in fandom are “controlled” by a single person
that’s the actual word I’ve seen used, multiple times
and once again, it is some racist bullshit
Two key takeaways:
1️⃣ "We hear and appreciate the people who continue to [...] hold us accountable."
2️⃣ "We remain committed to making our spaces more welcoming and safe for all users."
Show this tweet to anybody who tried to shut down

It's great to be able to talk about how dysfunctional the OTW is, but it's a privilege to be able to call for reform of the entire org as a white person. POC don't get to talk about that without being harassed out of fandom, so don't pretend that's a failing of
#EndOTWRacism
Top tip: if you're tired of doing research, take a break. Grab some water, go for a walk, reset, and then go back to the research when you're ready. Nothing says microaggression like, "I don't give a shit about your culture, I just wanna post my fic and get my validation." (1/2)
So apparently their beef is that the
#EndOTWRacism
campaign didn't go far enough, and what it should have done is call for a complete reform of the OTW structure.
They don't realize how much bad faith backlash would have resulted if that had been one of the campaign's goals.
I've seen many sceptics call this "censorship" or "anti sentiment", but wanting a better platform for POC fans is the exact opposite of these things. The OTW themselves admitted issues with racism in fandom. I just want to see decisive, concrete action on their prior commitments.
An excellent thread that very strongly echoes my experience growing up Chinese in a predominantly white culture, and the racism and frustration encountered in c-fandom spaces, when non-CN people have continued to center themselves.
i look at my own experiences of racism within the fandom, how even with strong support from cn diaspora and non-cn diaspora friends, i've wanted to take breaks,
especially when individuals ignore our concerns—or worse, tell us we're overreacting, being a thoughtless mob—
This not only demonstrates the real need for
#EndOTWRacism
, but proves that it's not just OTW that has structural racism built into it, it's all of fandom. The fact that Rahaeli is actively pushing back against anti-racism work should be alarming for all Dreamwidth users too.
What, like we spend all day fighting against all the racism we see at school and at work, and in our social structures, but then we come home, plug into the AO3 and just go, "Nah, imma let this racist thing slide, these people are just having fun"?
Can you imagine how many ⚪ ppl would have said, "See, these POC just want to destroy the OTW", and "they're antis, trying to destroy our porn" if a complete overhaul of the OTW had been on the table? Scaremongering about replacement theory would have been rampant.
Let's get one thing straight here, racism in fandom exists and racism in c-fandom exists, particularly with white and non-Chinese fans being racist toward Chinese and diaspora creators. This can take many forms, whether directly or indirectly via a myriad of microaggressions.
I am fucking livid that they have this much money and they insist on not spending it and doing absolutely nothing but continue to rely on their volunteers to do things at a snail's pace. I stopped donating to them this year, and I don't feel bad. They have 2-3y funds in reserves.
#NayeHealth
Visited Naye yesterday after work. Surgery like this really does a number on one's body, but she's on the upward trajectory. Going to visit her again today when hours open. Hopefully she'll be back home in a few days' time. Thanks for all y'all's well wishes 💙
Their whole rant about
#EndOTWRacism
was just so unnecessary, and all about hating on the most vocal POC who have experienced racism and have been brave enough to call it out, like Stitch and Dr Pande. They are often demonized and harassed on Rahaeli's own fucking platform!
Top tip: if you see/read something by a diaspora creator you don't like, don't go Full Racist. RACISM BAD, I shouldn't be the one to have to tell you this. If you're non-Chinese and see a friend/acquaintance being racist, FFS call them out on it. Don't be silent.
I just got a letter confirming I am now a Swedish citizen! 🇸🇪
The application took 5 weeks and cost less than the Nintendo Switch I treated myself to before Christmas. Really shows that the complicated bureaucracy some countries have is just xenophobic gatekeeping.
Applying for citizenship is often an arduous and expensive experience. It costs £1,330 and is 30 pages in the UK, and . $725 and 20 pages for the USA.
I just applied for Swedish citizenship. The form asked me 10 questions, it took me 20 mins, it cost 1,500 kr (=£130 or $180).
Fandom should be welcoming to POC fans. The AO3 should be a safe space to play, create and have fun for us too. This means the OTW needs to take concrete action, like hiring a diversity consultant, to make that happen.
#EndOTWRacism
, and end it NOW.
Battle couple is one of my favorite tropes of all time and I'm slightly upset that the show did not serve me this to eat. There's just a few seconds and that's basically it? 😩 Time for fanfiction to fill in the blanks I guess.
#MysteriousLotusCasebook
#莲花楼 #笛花
Frankly, it's embarrassing that it exists in the current state it's in. Instead of defending the massive inertia it has, fans and users should ask why they aren't using their US$1M surplus to make the much-needed improvements they promised over two years ago.
We do not condone anti-Muslim sentiments under any circumstances. Additionally, to reiterate: cybersecurity experts believe the group claiming responsibility is lying about their affiliation and reasons for attacking websites. View the group's statements with skepticism.
I appear to be drawing some ire from some Mainland folks (why are you on Twitter?) for expressing that it's possible to better for China while being critical of its current policies.
So, I'm just gonna throw out some further reading material:
Yet fandom, when pointed out a certain thing they do is racist, get their hackles up, and their arguments basically boil down to, "Well, racism is the price you pay for having fanfiction" and "fandom is racist because there's racism in society."
It seems the AO3 has no idea what they are doing, financially for a non-profit, long-term wrt plans for improvement and projects, and their response about ethical concerns paying staff part-time laughably shows how little knowledge and experience they have. AO3 is a FUCKING mess.
Thanks to everyone who has been sending support to
@unnaye
. She's still in the hospital. I've handed off some essentials, but sadly they're not allowing any visitors.
If you can spare a moment for her in your thoughts today, more good vibes appreciated. It's been a rough week.
Rahaeli's failure to acknowledge that CONTENT is a vector that many harassers are currently using to CONDUCT racist harassment of fans is stunningly naive at best, racist at worst. If you are only looking at CONDUCT, there's a giant loophole you're overlooking.
I see so many white folks get super defensive when asked to stop doing a thing/do a different thing. So imma say this again:
1️⃣ Apologize.
2️⃣ Stop doing the wrong thing.
3️⃣ Start doing the right thing.
It's literally that fucking simple.
Nothing is gonna stop me harder in my tracks from giving you that validation than when I see something or somebody who very loudly didn't do their research. It's honestly a win-win for everyone if you at least make a good faith effort. (2/2)
This means continuing to push back against the misconception that antiracism=censorship and having the uncomfortable conversations with our fandom friends about how to make it a safe space for POC fans without taking your porn.
There's more work to be done, let's fucking go.
One of the frequent excuses used against implementing anything antiracist on the AO3 is that it "won't work/will be abused by bad actors" but when it comes to banning AI, suddenly everybody's willing to try anything. This double standard is fucking racist.

Following analysis is a quick rundown of my initial impressions based on the limited questions being asked at this time. All opinions my own.
And every single time I watch a clip, I'm scream laughing because he also transcends the boundaries of secondhand embarrassment, straight into hilarity.
We need to keep holding the OTW accountable, particularly for the hiring of the diversity consultant and the implementation of their suggestions and proposals. This means raising awareness of the problem of racism in fandom and continuing to speak out.
I came out as non-binary/genderfluid to my line manager today and she was so emotionally supportive and is going to start using they/them pronouns at work for me. 🥺
There's hope yet in this world, folx.
Sylle has said it better than I could have, so imma drop their tweet here. Using two frequently harassed POC fans as a wedge issue to discredit the aims of

is a low blow.
this is a lot of words to obfuscate a fear of """censorship""" and of actions that need to happen for AO3 to align with its supposed anti-racist goals. anti-racism must reach far and deep to be at all effective.
so op of the

(op asked to stay anonymous other than their reddit name since they have faced a lot of harassment before, but gave me permission to share screenshots)
One of the reasons anti-discriminatory policies exist is too make spaces and platforms safer for everyone. They're not trying to solve the core problem, but making the space better instead. This is what we need to recognize.
I forgot to share this gem from FMP's post yesterday that apparently his nickname is Copy Ninja Sharingan no Kakashi (yes, from Naruto) because Sleuth did action choreo on the fly during filming and he was very quick at learning the movements he was taught. #傅孟柏
Rahaeli doubling down on the stitch dog pile is enraging and senseless. If she truly cared about fandom racism, she wouldn't have suddenly swerved to undermine
#endotwracism
while mischaracterizing one of the only fans talking abt racism in fandom spaces. 'Good faith' my ass. 🙄
Interviewer: Stability AI (one of the companies in a class action being sued by artists) claims that creating databases of copyrighted images to train AI is considered fair use.
OTW Legal Chair, Betsy Rosenblatt: I tend to agree with Stability AI's statement.
🤡🤡🤡
BULLSHIT. The fight against racism isn't supposed to be comfortable nor is it easy. Letting racism in fandom slide or doubling down on having unintentionally done a racism makes the racism problem worse. Because the actual racists then see that they can get away with it.
