Really appreciate everyone who showed up or tuned in to see our presentations! Especially those cheering us on even after seeing us present this research in poster form a few days earlier at #EntSoc23!🦟
Congrats Ben's @Benjasquito @BugmanBurgunder on your research in progress talks 🎊🦟 @UMDEntomology @MosquitoDoc @UMDscience

Everyone is always saying that the CDC tick muffin tweet is bad sci-comm. Totally disagree. Glad they're bringing it back
Nymphal blacklegged ticks are only 1 millimeter in size! That’s about the size of a poppyseed! Look closely when checking for ticks and remove as soon as possible: https://t.co/CDnivZIxMd

Yet again, I am totally blown away by the diversity of life on Cash Lake's shores! Today I found more toad bugs, my first marsh ground beetle, an absolutely miniscule rove beetle, and a gorgeous unknown fly! (ephydrid?)

Found a full rainbow of toad bugs today along the shores of Cash Lake, MD today! I had no idea that they were able to swim...or that they would be so toad-like in their strokes!

As Joro Spiders continue to spread in the southeast, they are now the most commonly encountered spider in much of the Atlanta metro. I designed an R Shiny app to visualize their distribution. It pulls data from @inaturalist: https://t.co/j6LMRFisow

I had just finished listening to @derekhennen's @Ologies episode (fantastic btw!), when I spotted this Myriophora scuttle fly harassing a millipede on the trail. What a cool coincidence!

Serapista sp. (Megachilidae, 6 species). Serapista is unusual among anthidiines in that there is no pale integumental patterning except on the faces of males. Instead, patterns are formed from lovely woolly patches of hairs.

I know the pain of trying to distinguish Megaselia by morphology, so papers like this one are highly important if we ever want to sort out that genus
DNA barcoding reveals that phorid fly species Megaselia sulphurizona comprises at least 16 species. Researchers say their findings may be just the tip of the iceberg of cryptic biodiversity in Megaselia flies.

Sharks have existed for about 250 million years longer than Saturn’s rings have.

More awesome work out of this passion project from John
This summer and fall, the #JoroSpider range expansion continued across the southeast. Data from @inaturalist observations and maps created in @rstudio. The range expansion in the past two years is really incredible. #invasivespecies

Dark paper wasps are my favorite insect, so it's sad to find one struggling on the sidewalk like I found this guy. However, I can always look forward to the foundresses emerging in the spring

Ever since I got back to NY, I have been looking for golden jumping spiders. I cannot believe that I finally found one of these beautiful spiders on the side of an academic building!

Robber flies (Asilidae) can be weary subjects for macro photography but are more cooperative when enjoying a meal. Such was the case for this Ommatius sp.

Despite their deceptively fearsome appearance, my only complaint about windscorpions is that they love to swoop in and steal the bugs I'm photographing. Also have had them run up my sleeves and pant legs which is no picnic. Big Bend, TX
