This makes sense for no one but @PierrePoilievre & his biggest supporters @realDonaldTrump @elonmusk. A caucus conclave would be the worst possible outcome. A fair, open and competitive leadership race is the only hope of actually providing a viable alternative to Canadians

The Goldenberg variation makes much more sense, for the party but especially the country: let the caucus choose. Get it done before Parliament returns. Then bring on the election. Maybe even call it yourself rather than wait for the government to be defeated.

Yes - but it will require an actual leadership contest, not a leader anointed in a caucus conclave and if the party is actually going to turn its fortunes around probably requires a new leader from outside of caucus and the usual contenders mentioned

CPC lead is half based on "I'm done with Trudeau" voters, plus voters tired of Liberals sounding like they care more about virtue than rent. Trudeau leaves: Liberals not out of the woods, but PM Poilievre becomes a ballot question & Liberals could redefine themselves.

A friendly reminder to Conservatives and all those agitating for a snap federal election in the midst of winter: an election will take place when, and only when, the government loses the confidence of the duly elected House of Commons. Newsflash: this isn’t new - it’s how it

If Trudeau resigns this week, here’s the likely sequence: 1) Prorogation. 2) He remains PM during 3-4 month race Not much changes though unless we elect an outsider not from the current caucus & usual contenders. Anything less is cementing a Trump-like Poilievre victory

PM Trudeau has no legitimate choice other than to announce a leadership convention and let the party decide who should lead it into the next election.

Someone who I think could actually give the party a viable chance of being competitive is @ArleneDickinson. She’s smart, successful, has a high profile and well liked. She’s said no in the past, so probably unlikely but she would be better than anyone being mentioned so far.

That being said his position has become untenable and I do think the prospect of becoming PM will start to draw some viable candidates from outside the caucus and usual names being floated. Depending how quickly it unravels

The other reason is there has been no credible alternative who could actually turn around the party’s fortunes and have a realistic path to victory from the contenders that are mentioned currently.

Given there are not delegated conventions (something he insisted on changing) riding associations and grassroots members have almost no way of removing a leader anymore. There really isn’t a grassroots organization anymore

A quick thread with 2 thoughts on what has been happening in Ottawa. 1) The main reasons @JustinTrudeau has been able to hold onto the leadership as long as he has against all odds is when he became leader he dismantled the party structure and centralized all control in the PMO

A lot of what’s happening in Ottawa today feels strangely familiar! Things generally don’t go well for Prime Ministers when they have deep division with their own Finance Minister, and this is now the second that has exited from this government over fiscal responsibility.
