🫛It is incredible to think that people 1000s of years ago were eating the same broad beans that we still grow to this day. Looking ahead, beans will continue to play a key role in the future of food: as a sustainable source of protein & as a functional food for #MentalHealth.

🦠Broad beans are also are packed with #fibre - which is great for gut health. A healthy gut microbiome can positively influence the gut-brain axis by producing neurotransmitters like #serotonin, which affects our mood regulation.

🫛When fermented, the beans can produce #GABA - another #neurotransmitter associated with relaxation and reducing anxiety. Examples of fermented broad beans include broad bean tempeh and doubanjiang (Chinese broad bean chilli paste).

#BroadBeans boost your brain chemicals!🧠. 😃The beans, pods, flowers & young shoots contain high levels of L-DOPA, a precursor to #dopamine-the neurotransmitter associated with good mood. L-DOPA can alleviate symptoms of #depression & reduce symptoms of Alzheimer's & Parkinson's

🪴No garden? No problem!.Dwarf varieties like “Sutton Dwarf” do not grow very big so can be grown in pots. ❄️Chilly days are a breeze!.Broad beans are temperate crops and can tolerate cold weather. Many hardy varieties can be sown in autumn for a spring harvest.

Want to grow #BroadBeans this year?🫛. 🚜Fertiliser-free!.Broad beans can fix their own #nitrogen with the help of special soil bacteria called rhizobia. Studies have shown that soils across the UK have this friendly bacteria already present -ready for #symbiosis with bean roots!
