Thanks to @MichaelRosenYes for highlighting the effects of severe hypothyroidism and how it’s often missed in younger people and in men. If you’re concerned about symptoms, please ask your GP to check your thyroid function.
I've just posted these pictures of me in 1980/81 on a thread where we're discussing hypothyroidism. The photos were taken after 15 years or so of undiagnosed hypothyrodism. @thyroiduk @britishthyroid

3/3 if you’ve an existing thyroid condition, you don’t need to follow a low-iodine diet unless your doctor advises you to. You can eat iodine containing foods as part of a balanced diet. Pregnancy supplements or multivitamins containing iodine (not in excessive amts) are also ok.

2/3 Achieving the recommended iodine daily intake of 150mcg (200 mcg in conception, pregnancy & postpartum) is therefore vital. Eggs, fish and milk are good sources of iodine. If you exclude these food groups, you should take a supplement containing iodine to address this.

A vital message in conception and pregnancy as well as for the general UK population which has a shockingly low iodine status worsened due to changes in diet over the past decade.
Today is World Iodine Deficiency Prevention Day, and we want to highlight the vital role of iodine for pregnant women. When iodine intake is not enough during pregnancy, thyroid hormone production can be impaired, slowing fetal growth and affecting brain development of the baby.

Great to see a new site added to this trial which will compare the outcomes of radiofrequency ablation with surgery on benign thyroid nodules. If you’re a patient with benign thyroid nodules living in this area, please ask your doctor about eligibility.
We are delighted to announce that Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is now officially open for recruitment!!🎊 A huge thank you to @BrookeJHB and the rest of the Buckinghamshire team @BucksHealthcare for their co-operation with the trial 🩵

1/2 whilst people with an existing thyroid condition should avoid excess iodine, and especially avoid kelp or iodine supplements, it can be eaten as part of a balanced diet. They should not follow a low iodine diet unless advised to do so by a healthcare practitioner.
