A lot of discussion this week around the bland state of American architecture, but wanted to point out something that hasn't received much attention: The revival of classical masonry-clad buildings. The epicenter is New York's Upper East Side, and it's just getting started.

Which kind of architecture do the Dutch prefer? I was wondering that for a long time - but now I know for sure. We asked Ipsos I&O, market leading research firm, to do a study for us. The results? Couldn't be more clear. A 🧵👇🏼

This👇is one of the most important posts I've seen in awhile. Read it carefully, then ask yourself "which side of the institutional fence am I on?"
people frequently send me pictures of large courtyard buildings: "Look, Alicia, at this beautiful courtyard block in [San Francisco]." This is not a courtyard block. This is two hundred units concentrated in a single large 5-over-1 building. These buildings cost many millions to

The fire departments and DOT engineers are dead wrong... literally. Meaning that following their recommendations on street trees and parking gets people maimed and killed. I've got receipts:

See those trees? The ones that provide that lovely shade, act to reduce heat sink effects, aid in stormwater management, and even act as added barriers between cars and those families in the photo? They’ve gotta go. For “safety”. So modern cities, new development simply can’t

These bricks could have lasted centuries, instead they will probably be gone in a few decades. This is what happens when you repoint mortar joints with cement rather than lime. The cement is harder than the bricks and traps water which expands and eventually destroy the bricks

A reminder that eaves are not architectural fluff. They actually serve an important function. That said, there’s no reason they can’t be decorative

Here is some of the depth I’m talking about you can achieve with structural masonry. First, the deep negatives that create dramatic shadows. And also, the corbeling outward from the wall towards the top. About 6” here.

Here it is completed. About 40’ tall. Marks the entrance to a sub-urban neighborhood. We did 2. What makes stuff like this make financial sense as a developer? Incredible branding. “Which neighborhood?” “The one with the brick towers.” “Oh, that one!” Sticks in ppl’s minds.

Topping out tower. With masonry: you can corbel out half the thickness of the masonry. For veneer, this is like ~1-3/4” (less w/ king). Not v much. But when you have a 12” wall? You can corbel out 6”. So you can get real depth; it opens up all kinds of detailing like here.
