Patients could be mentally ill. They could be going through withdrawal. Unkind behavior might be due to a medication or illness’s side effects. Or they might just be upset and distrustful. You don’t get to match that energy. If you want to, go work in another field.

A lot of people don’t want to hear this but in my experience, the meanest patients have been the ones who needed extra care and kindness the most. And they’re the ones who still are glad to see me years later, because I gave that to them. I would wish for the same treatment.

quite honestly. people having to deal with addiction, withdrawal, and being displaced all at once will prioritize their needs. not only is withdrawal something that can kill you or make you very sick, it’s easy to feel hopeless while not having secure housing.

I work for doctors (who would never refuse to treat anyone) & I’ve been involved in the medical field for almost 10 years. That phrase does the trick. I would recommend adding “I want it documented in my chart that you’re refusing to treat me”. You deserve to be taken seriously.
