When a student acts inappropriately ask: "Why do you think that is okay?" "How can you help fix this situation?" "What can we do differently next time?" Questions build reflection. Reflection builds change. #PositiveDiscipline #StudentBehavior #BehaviorIntervention

Hear What Not How...When working with challenging students, hear what they are saying—not how they are saying it. Their how often ruins their what. #Education #TeachingTips #StudentSuccess #EdChat #TeacherLife

Stop using the term "behavior problem" when discussing students. Behaviors are not the problems, but rather the solutions kids are choosing to their problems. We just need to show them a better way to solve their problems! #BehaviorSupport #TeachingTips

Some adults in school are good at pouring gasoline on a tiny fire. Not saying kid isn't at fault, rude, disrespectful, etc. Simply asking do you pour water or gasoline? The goal is to defuse every time.

2 words teachers should try eliminating..."I need..." Try instead... "Thank you for... "What do you think about..." "I would appreciate it if..." Thanking someone before they do something is a game changer! Try it! #TeachingTips

Power struggles don't help learning - calm responses do. When we stop trying to win the moment/argument and start protecting the relationship, then arguments lose their power.

Tips for managing students: 1. You can't control other people, only how you respond to other people. 2. Discomfort is the appetizer for growth. You can't grow without some discomfort. 3. Listen to students without expectations. 4. Every day is a new day. Don't hold grudges!

Teach students to pick their heads up in class. Not because it's disrespectful to the teacher, but because if you don't hold your own head high, why would others think highly of you? It's about respect & dignity for them, not us. #thatonekid

2 magic defusing words, "I'm sorry!" When a kid is yelling at you keep repeating these words until the student calms down. If they ask, "what are you sorry for?" Say, I am sorry for whatever I did or someone else did in this class to make you that upset. #TeachingTips

How to respond when a student says "I don't know". I tell students to pretend they knew or take a guess. This lowers their guard down. We already established that you don't know so no harm in venturing a guess. This strategy works more than 50% of the time. Thoughts? #teachers
