Worth noting that this thread isn’t about venting; it’s about raising awareness and inviting more people into a dialogue about Parallel Cinema that still deserves a wider space.

The paperback edition will be out next year, and I’m quietly hopeful it’ll find new readers; students, cinephiles, wanderers. Grateful to everyone who has championed it so far! ♥️ 🎞️

Maybe coverage will come later. These things often take time to find their audience. What matters is that the stories and struggles of that generation of filmmakers continue to resonate.

It also says something about how our film discourse & culture tends to orbit the same few stars and releases. There’s a vast, fascinating history that remains under-discussed and that’s what I tried to tap into with my book.

Still, I hope more readers, especially younger ones curious about India’s alternative film movements, find their way to it. Always open to discussions, reviews, or collaborations around the themes it explores.

Funny how the films themselves were often ignored by the mainstream, and now a book about them meets a similar fate. In some ways, I suppose that’s fitting. Parallel cinema stays parallel. 😂

That said, I’m deeply grateful to the few independent voices, academics, and cinephiles who have engaged with it so thoughtfully. The conversations it has sparked, however small, remind me why I wrote it in the first place, to keep that spirit of Parallel Cinema alive.

Surprised since I've been banging on about Parallel Cinema for over a decade now and have a PhD in the field, and have curated on the subject too. It was written with the general reader in mind so do feel it is broadly accessible to anyone interested in Indian Cinema.

Bit disappointed that hardly any of the major film publications in India bothered to cover my book on Parallel Cinema. Seems to have gone completely under the radar. Not seeking validation, etc. but would be nice to have more people know and talk about it.

The BFI monograph on Mani's USKI ROTI (1969) is nearing completion; had the aim of getting a first draft done by end of the year...

Just a reminder that my new book on Indian Parallel Cinema was published earlier this year. If anyone is interested in reviewing for any film publication outlets, etc. then please do get in touch; I can share/email a copy for review.

Thank you to everyone who supported us this year. We had a lengthy catch up over the weekend with the aim of getting the project back on track. We still have our sights set on Om-Dar-B-Dar as our first Blu-ray release for the new label. A new kickstarter will go live next year.

Never thought I would ever see a Shyam Benegal film make it to Blu-ray home video in a boutique release. So honoured to have been able to write the essay. Another much anticipated release from @SecondRunDVD & landmark restoration from @FHF_Official. #ParallelCinema
