5 Living in Ireland - Dublin is expensive, and tax rates are relatively high. ✅ We have "free" public schooling ✅ Some childcare subsidies ✅ Parental leave ❗️But our public healthcare is under pressure - many opt for private insurance.

4 Teaching - Teaching loads are internationally comparable (I think quite good in our School). Importantly, we don’t have REF/TEF, so student ratings aren’t linked to funding - This may allow for more space to focus on pedagogy, scholarship, and long-term academic development.

3 Research Funding - Ireland isn’t facing the same funding changes as UK/US, but research funding is still very competitive and limited. Strong opportunities via EU funding (e.g. Horizon Europe, ERC, MSCA), and good national support for ECRs.

2 Conditions - These are permanent appointments – (equivalent to US tenure). Once in post, there are no formal KPIs tied to salary or contract renewal (no quotas for grants or papers) - yet expected to be active in research, teaching, and service to remain globally competitive.
