"Attack, attack, attack—I'm thinking to myself....Cade Horton kind of looks like Jake Arrieta out there..." On today’s Cubs on Tuesday podcast, we break down what’s fueling Horton's success: the cut-ride fastball uniqueness, higher zone percentage, and a new four-pitch mix.

In an alternate reality they’ve been Cubs for half a decade together already

Cubs should trade for Bryce Harper and sign Kyle Schwarber (I’m joking)

Spectacular jerseys. If the Cubs didn't win the World Series in their current alternate blues, I would be excessively calling for the '80s blues to return.

Why $30M AAV? Averaging his value over the last year years equals $93M / 3 years = $31M. Factor in some recency, age, and opt out value — $30M seems somewhere in the realm of reality, ya know?

I like Cease. The Cubs have had success with similar profiles. They might add or refine a secondary pitch to complement his four-seam/slider profile. A short-term, opt-out-heavy deal (e.g., $30M AAV, 3 years, opt-out after 1-2) may work for the Cubs.
Our @MLBBruceLevine says MLB sources have confirmed the #Cubs will have interest in SP Dylan Cease this offseason. Bruce and @DavidHaugh are talking about Cease and a possible return to Chicago now on Inside the Clubhouse! Hang here: https://t.co/6pC174BHJJ

Cubs prospect Jostin Florentino has one of the best sliders in the minors. But he's the only prospect to gain over 5 mph on his fastball this season. More details: https://t.co/DOVEDVglWR

I’m in awe of Shohei—if only the Cubs let Rizzo pitch more, they would’ve had their own version. I blame Dale Sveum for not managing Rizzo correctly.

Managers get paid on average around $2M, and Counsell gets paid $8M. If you take a little bit of money from the player budget, that $6M difference is roughly 0.5 WAR, which is the equivalent of 45 innings of league average pitching production.

One challenge for modern baseball managers is providing pitching value over 162 games. In 2023 August, David Ross used high-leverage relievers an average of 2 times every 3 games. In August-September 2025, Craig Counsell used his high leverage arms an average of 2 times every 5
