I would question the logic of so-called “experts” advising people to eat less Irish meat when this sustainably-produced product will be replaced in the diet with the likes of avocados that are imported thousands of miles from irrigated regions under immense water stress

I am baffled to say the least. To see that the EU - being already self sufficient in beef - will import 99,000t of beef from a region that is actively involved in large-scale deforestation while European farmers bend over backwards to improve sustainability. Where is the logic?

Abundant rainfall means water stress is not an issue when producing food in Ireland. Currently, 40% (and rising) of the world’s food comes from irrigated agriculture. If the world is to feed its growing population sustainably, Ireland should be producing more food, not timber

Travelled from Cavan to a conference in the Clayton Hotel, Ballsbridge, today. In total, the tolls amounted to €28.40 and cost of parking was €21. Add the diesel after that. Call me a Cavan-man if you like but that ain’t cheap by any measure!

Another ill-thought out publicity stunt by a students’ union in a weak effort to increase engagement with the students of DCU. The lack of substance behind the motion is evident as the slide depicts a dairy cow, a UK flag and what appears to be a goat above the ‘NoBeef’ slogan

In 2022, the average dairy farm made a profit of €148,000 while the average cattle-rearing farm made a profit of only €8,700, yet Macra seems to feel that grants for expanding dairy farmers is a more pressing issue than those facing other sectors
