And thank you to the @OrganicCenter for funding! We need more studies on cover cropping in organic systems.

Thanks especially to the first author, Isaac, who stuck with this study tenaciously during the pandemic after he finished his undergraduate senior thesis in our lab in 2019.

Our study also triangulates evidence for soil carbon supporting yield increases from other studies led by @eeoldfield, @wooddecomp and others, and addresses some of the challenging issues of endogeneity they bring up.

But our comprehensive meta-analysis shows that while reduced yields from cover cropping can occur, most experimental studies do not show yield reductions.

Other studies ( https://t.co/apQyzoCvNp) have argued yield decreases from cover crops will reduce climate benefits from land-use spillovers.

Legume cover crops led to the largest yield and soil carbon increases, +24.3% and +1.5 g SOC per g of soil, respectively.

We also found that "Increases in SOC directly increased crop yields in soils with initial SOC concentrations below 11.6 g kg−1". In other words, we found a direct, positive link between changes in soil carbon and changes in crop yield, but only in low carbon soils.

We found that cover cropping increases crop yields and soil carbon - together, in the same place - ~60% of the time across 434 paired observations from five continents. Tradeoffs occurred in ~33% of cases

We are proud too! What a rich interdisciplinary collaboration looking at how tipping points in adoption patterns of diversified farming systems emerge: farmers make forward looking decisions but ecosystems can be slow to respond
