Want to learn more about fungal ecology thru cake? Check out our lab's entry in @KQED "Science is A Piece of Cake" contest. Too many people from the lab to list individually but shout out to our ring leaders @eco_genome & Esther Tok (we start at min 52)

Ever wonder how climate change is going to affect symbiotic interactions? In this new @NSF funded work w/ @qin_clara @Mike_VanNuland @PellitierPeter @KaiZhuPhD we project future range mismatches for EcM #fungi and their host trees

…and that most of the important ways in which mycorrhizal symbiosis transforms our view of nature hold regardless of what what version of CMNs we eventually discover to be true. 6/n.

SO, let’s continue to research and debate CMNs, and it’s OK if they get a somewhat larger amount of public attention because admittedly they are cool. BUT let’s also keep in mind that this is actually a relatively unimportant part of mycorrhizal research… 5/n.

AND - there is a huge interest in #FUNGI now - how they can be used to build a green economy, sequester carbon, or buffer ecosystems against climate change that has NOTHING to do with CMNs. 4/n. For example

There are many reasons mycorrhizal work has grown dramatically - better molecular methods, general interest in the microbiome, appreciation for the ubiquity of mutualisms, and recognized importance of mycorrhizal fungi in biogeochemical cycles. 3/n.

CMNs are actually a VERY small part of mycorrhizal research (then and now) and I disagree that CMNs (let alone one scientists’ work in this field) have “propelled the mycorrhizal research community from an obscure and underfunded field to one that excites the public” 2/n.

I’ve enjoyed recent debates about common mycorrhizal networks and the #woodwideweb as well explained in this nice @nature_news piece by @Aisling_Irwin BUT I disagree with one misconception that I think is being propagated in these discussions 1/n .

Nature - A popular theory about how trees cooperate has enchanted the public and raised the profile of forest conservation. But some ecologists think its scientific basis has been oversold.
