The [Hamas] response, said Bader Al-Saif, was “in the same style of the offer it received — vague & incomplete… “We have a quasi response to a quasi offer — one in need of more details, guarantees & enforcement ability on both Hamas & Israel.”

Trump’s EO on Qatar is certainly a precedent for the Gulf region. But I wouldn’t be too excited about it nor recommend other Gulf states pursue this path. EO’s are temporary, stand on shaky grounds,& fall short of the more preferable binding defense treaty

Wrote the piece before the apology. Sound development but not enough: Gulf states need to take action & activate messaging that effectively quarantines this attack on Qatar as a deeply mistaken one off & absolutely not the start of an alarming new trend.

Several partners of Gulf states readily dismiss Gulf unity. They find it performative, comes in waves, & serves passing interests at best. There are elements of this, but holding it as a rigid descriptor of Gulf affairs misses the bigger picture.

The precedent of an Israeli attack & the threat of a repeat underscore the urgency of GCC states coming to grips w/ the vulnerabilities that currently face them. Remaining idle with no impactful response to Israeli aggression is not an option for the Gulf.
