Progress is measured by a vector. There is both speed and direction. If the direction is wrong, the speed is effectively negative.

The speed with which you can respond to change is inversely proportional to the amount of control.

As a CEO I believe in radical transparency. Every few weeks we have a companywide meeting where we go over our financial situation in detail. Anyone can ask questions. When everyone knows how much money the company has it's easier to explain things like pay and staffing levels.

My therapist told me that if I had to perform "at my best" all the time, then it wouldn't be my best, it'd be my norm. I need a moment to recover. 😂

If a team doesn't understand what a customer needs in a story, call them up and ask. Don't ever delegate that task to a PO/PM. Allowing anybody to be the sole conduit to the customer is a huge anti-pattern.

Last year I finally sold The Tab, the media business I co-founded, raised $10 million investment for, and sadly failed to turn into a huge success. Here's what I learned during the two years I spent selling the company: https://t.co/vLLtg2sXSt

@ShaneAParrish I’m never as good or as bad as anyone (me) thinks I am. As a result I don’t hold on to generalised opinions. Specific feedback is good, judgements less so.

Esoteric metrics based on analyzing extensive data about employee activities has been mostly the domain of fringe software vendors. Now it's built into MS 365. A new feature to calculate 'productivity scores' turns Microsoft 365 into an full-fledged workplace surveillance tool:

Instead of estimating stories, learn how to make them smaller. You get the same "have a discussion" benefits that people claim is the "real" reason to estimate (we can discuss that), and you also end up with things you can implement and deploy very quickly.

You don't write stories. You have conversations with your users in order to discover (or capture) them. You're a note taker, not an author.

Things that help software dev go faster: - understanding the purpose of the work - a clear vision of the end goal (and of the steps to get there) - patterns and tooling that help developers do the right thing by default Things that don’t help: - pressure to deliver faster

Entrepreneurship culture in America is all messed up and it’s a shame. TechCrunch. Product Hunt. Shark Tank. It’s all about new ideas. Changing the world. Innovation. 0 to 1. Blue ocean. Venture capital and exits and scalability. And ITS ALL A LIE.

"The teams are too imature to self organize" 🙄. That's just an excuse from control-obscessed management to maintain power. If they were really interested in moving towards self organization, they'd just do that and get the teams some help to get over the bumps.
