Also, in 2023, Cease had baseball's second-worst defensive outfield behind him in Chicago. Similarly, the Padres' defense was pretty mid overall in 2025. That surely contributed to his elevated BABIP's – .330 and .320 for an extreme fly-ball pitcher?! – and inflated ERA's.
