VERY EXCITED to finally share this news: I'm joining
@PantheraCats
as the Conservation Genetics Program Coordinator! I'll be developing and implementing genetic methodologies for wild cat conservation. This is a dream job: great people, focus, reach, and location. LET'S GOOO!!!
I'm stoked to announce that a big step to achieve success in these endeavors is the hiring of
@biologistimo
as the
@PantheraCats
Conservation Genetics Program Coordinator. We're excited to have Imogene join us in the New Year, and build a program to help save all the cats!
In case you wondered what it’s like to be a woman who needs reproductive medical care:
The hospital just called to ask why I wanted sedation for my surgical procedure tomorrow.
Because it’s usually done without.
Many of you know my mom’s house was destroyed in the 2021 Texas freeze, just 6 months after my dad died. We just learned
@ATT
has been billing internet at this house for nearly 3 yrs and she owes ~$5000 for a house that was ripped down to the studs.
@ATT
won’t help.
I’m just so exhausted by reproductive care. Having endometriosis is exhausting. It took me 8 years to get diagnosed, I’ve had 2 surgeries, countless other awful exams and surgical procedures while awake, and I’ll never do it again.
I have had several procedures done awake. Some were planned, they told me it wouldn’t hurt “that bad”, and some in ERs lying on a table being told “it will be over soon.”
Technically a colonoscopy can be done awake (and is in some countries), but we don’t bat an eye at sedation.
For my surgery last year where they removed over a dozen uterine polyps, my medical team first offered to do it in-office. Not on a table with an anesthesiologist. In an office. With twilight drugs. Because it was faster.
Can you fucking imagine (many women actually can).
@ABC
Wildlife biologist here. The people are WAY too close. A black bear with cubs can be VERY aggressive, and what she will/won't tolerate isn't always clear. If she hurts someone, the state will euthanize her, and her cubs will either starve or (if caught) spend their life in cages.
YO. I know we all WANT to return to work, return to our respective normal, get back our financial security etc.
But we can't.
Because we are in the middle of a global pandemic. It's not over in 15 days just because Trump wants his economy back. Don't support
#ReopenAmerica
Well this has blown up. I’m pleased to get more eyes on this too-common situation and the traumas of medical misogyny. The stories are overwhelming, I hate it for all of us. The small handful of criticisms are weird, though. Go yell at the sky.
Since Twitter is talking about rabies, a quick thread:
The second time I got a rabies shot was because I got scratched by a *dead* raccoon. I was transferring one that died in a rehab center to a museum. A claw poked thru the bag and scraped my hand.
I guess I’ll add that it’s not necessary for me to disclose the procedure. There are literally dozens of comments covering about ten different surgeries and related -opsies. Half of us have had half of them. They all really hurt. That’s my point.
It’s always a great time to talk about bobcats, so let’s chat. If we haven’t met, hi! I’m Imogene, I’m a conservation biologist and I studied wild bobcats for several years. See pic of me handling an anesthetized bobcat. She’s alive and I have vet training + permits to do this.
I'm not here to say what the man should or shouldn't have done- having been screamed at by bobcats myself, I totally understand their panic. Tossing the cat as he did isn't great, but what are you supposed to do when you grab onto an apex carnivore like that?
I feel bad for the bobcat in the video because he got THROWN, but we're not going to vilify the guy for protecting his wife. If I was holding a bobcat that was trying to bite me, I would absolutely throw it away from me!
.
@ATT
my mother has tried to get assistance but so far no one seems able to help. Y’all are just saying “that’s too bad” for billing an account *with no card on file* for 3 years for a totally destroyed house. As a result she can’t get internet service by any provider right now.
@ATT
Please RT. What company charges an account for 3 years with no card on file and never suspends service?
@ATT
this is what you did to my mom when her house was destroyed in the 2021 Texas freeze. Idk what got missed but charging for services not rendered is fraud.
@ATT
My mom is a widow and companies love to take advantage of folks. The card was removed but somehow
@ATT
kept charging her account. The house was a construction zone for 3 years and you’re telling her she owes you $5000?
Case in point: me wearing Kevlar gloves while handling an awake 6week old bobcat kitten a farmer called the police on. I and another grad student went out to investigate and return the animal to its den. Even at this age, you don’t want to mess with those teeth!
I couldn’t be more excited to share: today I received my PhD! I’m so in love with the people and places that made this happen. This is a dream come true.
Can’t wait to share what’s next; thank you for loving
#snowleopards
and for supporting me thru this heartsong endeavor.
One of the coolest things I've ever seen was watching a 3-legged starving bobcat successfully catch and eat a prairie dog. It was an old male and he managed the kill in an open field with a mangled leg, likely shot by a rancher. Check it out:
I’m not going to link the article because
@WSJ
doesn’t deserve clicks for publishing absolute trash, but here’s a little gem from the insulting, sexist, garbage take against Dr. Jill Biden and her credentials.
If it’s one thing men have, it’s the audacity.
Obligatory tweet to remind you that biological sex is not binary and that deviations from sex chromosomes XX and XY exist (eg, XXY, intersex ind), are not "other."
Also, biological sex and gender are NOT the same, but even if they were, neither are binary you absolute numpties.
If you are approached by an aggressive bobcat, make loud noises, wave your arms, and throw things at it. I would also stomp loudly a few ft in its direction as a bluff charge. The goal is to appear bigger and madder so the animal decides you aren't worth it.
I’m not actively researching bobcats anymore, but I do have a paper in review I hope to share soon.
If you like bobcats, let’s be friends! Just know they make terrible pets. I don’t care if it’s legal in your state, no.
(Pic of mad live-trapped cat for research. Released).
Aaaaand if you live in an area where bobcats and Canada lynx overlap, here is a handy pic to tell them apart!
Bobcats can be red, gray, or beige, with varying degrees of spottiness. Canada lynx are mostly gray or gray/brown and lack spots along the torso.
It blows my mind that the same system that gives patients morphine for dental work has almost zero protocol for anesthetics and/or pain relievers when it comes to procedures involving the cervix or uterus.
My mother texted me some advice today that is pure mom gold, and I thought I'd share it with you in case you need to hear it, too:
"That naggy doubting imposter syndrome gnome that lives in your head...punch it in the face. You are a damn treasure to the planet. Period."
But, bobcats don’t normally seek out humans. Most interactions we hear about are with cornered animals found in buildings, or when pets are attacked. Bobcats are intense, loud, and obnoxious, but they are defensive animals, not offensive animals.
Bobcats are medium-sized felids that range from southern Canada thru most of the contiguous US down to Oaxaca, Mexico. They thrive in a variety of habitats, from swamps to deserts to mountains, and can survive alongside urban environments.
My dad died unexpectedly last Thursday. There are no words to describe the depth of our grief. I am simultaneously so grateful to have been his daughter, and drowning from the weight of his absence. The world has lost a true kindness, a genius, and a wonderfully funny friend.
Y'all I had a colonoscopy last week, and as I was recovering from the anesthesia I looked my nurse right in her eyes and said "thanks for all the butt stuff."
@ATT
Sorry for the dump y’all but my mom has had a really difficult 3 years. It’s this stuff on repeat. Unfortunately shit like this happens to widows/widowers when literally anything falls thru the cracks amidst personal trauma. Add to this the Texas freeze and it’s sadly not unique.
Bobcats are primarily crepuscular, which means they are most active at dusk and dawn. They spend a lot of time resting during the middle of the day, but it's not out of the ordinary for them to be out and about, nor indicative of illness if you see one.
As habitat generalists, they also have a generalist diet and will eat all manner of small rodents, rabbits and hares, birds, squirrels, and even deer (brave adults only). They are solitary-ish, but collar data suggests, like many carnivores, they tolerate others fairly well.
The best way to reduce the spread of rabies in your area, for any species and for any rabies variant, is to 1. vaccinate your pets and 2. not feed wildlife, or feral domestic pets. When animals congregate, they are more likely to contract disease.
So it looks like a juvenile bobcat was sitting under a family’s car and got totally freaked out by human activity around said car and attacked the legs of a woman. Her husband *wrestled the bobcat into the air* and tosses it across the yard. It’s...a lot.
Long-term research on California bobcats found that 90% of the cats tested positive for anticoagulant rodenticide post-mortem. The cause: eating rodents in urban areas that have ingested rat poison. This doesn't always kill the cats, but it does make them sick.
Bobcats are listed as a species of least concern by the IUCN, tho some research suggests populations are declining in much of the US. They are often hunted without limits, both as non-game animals and furbearers. One issue that's becoming concerning: anticoagulant rodenticides.
Bobcats are opportunistic hunters and will kill small pets, but I'm not sure how common it is for them to actually eat a pet dog or cat vs killing it to eliminate a threat. Carnivores do that sometimes, sorry.
@ATT
This is egregious because
@ATT
has sent at least a portion of this to a collections agency, meaning they could impact my mom’s credit score for not paying for services not rendered. Oh, and some of this isn’t just billed-
@ATT
cancelled her account suspension and resumed charges.
Someone messaged me on Instagram to tell me that science & glamour have nothing to do with each other.
So here’s me, modeling on the edge of a cliff I used to (successfully) live-trap foxes off of. And I’m
#stillascientist
Five thousand dollars was nearly half of my salary during my master’s degree. It’s rent, mortgage payments, medical care costs. There is no excuse for a corporation to be able to accidentally steal this much money from someone, difficult time or not.
@ABC
Great example of why domesticated pets need better care than simply being thrown outside. You cannot blame a wild predator for being exactly that. You should however blame the owner for letting their unprepared pet be exposed like this. Nothing brave about this poor cat.
@ATT
@ATTHelp
Update:
@ATT
Past billing for stolen funds has vanished from my mom’s online account. All account history is gone, including the $5k they TOOK (I previously said they billed it, but it was taken). She can’t even go online to print out the bills.
@ATT
how will you correct this?
@ATT
@ATTHelp
To summarize:
@ATT
undid my mom’s account suspension and resumed autobilling for her house that was destroyed in the 2021 Texas freeze. They took $5000 for services not rendered. They’ve billed an additional $1k to collections. Now they’ve erased the account and payment history.
My 60 yo uncle fell off a roof and suffered a massive brain injury two years ago. Today he wrote his name! Please RT and write a word of encouragement for me to read to him tomorrow- he deserves to celebrate this milestone!
@kslnewsradio
Content like this requires input from a wildlife professional lest it encourage carnivore intolerance/retaliatory killing. I’m relieved the runner is safe, but he was not stalked. He’s being pushed away from a cub. While both are scary, the threat is not the same.
@ATT
I also appreciate that I’m leveraging 70k people who are here for science to help me with this, please know I don’t take it lightly and it’s a last resort. Thank you.
@ATT
God I can’t even get it all right because
@ATT
messss this up so bad.
@ATT
you didn’t have a card in file because my mom suspended her account after her house was destroyed but *you resumed charges and actually took this money*
The woman in front of me on this plane is talking about pesticides and vaccinations and how “not all countries are created equal” and she’s “really into health, you know, like, gluten” and I think I’m going to scream.
Xenophobia and being anti-bread are NOT wellness, Karen.
Some people are also saying she was holding a pet carrier with a cat in it. I haven't verified that but it seems a like a reach behaviorally for a bobcat to cross the street to attack a cat with humans around.
Sidenote: bobcats don't hybridize with domestic cats.
If you are attacked by a bobcat, keep it off your face and neck. Not because the animal is going to suffocate you by biting you, but because you could lose an eye. The claws are just as effective as the teeth.
Rabies presents differently, but even without the classic signs (stumbling, drooling, confusion, aggression, photophobia, water obsessed), an animal can still transmit it. This is why it is especially important to STOP FEEDING WILDLIFE.
Yes, including cat food in your yard.
That said, a bobcat doesn't have to be sick to totally ruin your day. When I was live-trapping bobcats, as with any animal, we took extreme care to ensure the safety of both human and animal. The reality is if a bobcat bit down on my hand, I'd be unlikely to use it again.
In the video that's currently trending, it looks to be a juvenile cat. I initially thought it was underneath their car and got spooked, but some have pointed out that the cat first crosses the street and runs into the woman, then grabbing onto her legs.
In my case, you could barely see the scratch. Doesn’t matter, the virus can enter your system if saliva/blood come into contact with your own (like breaking the skin with a bite/scratch).
This is why it’s important to get vaxxed if a bat is in your room: you may not see a bite.
@ATT
Y’all have gaslit
@JohannaYale
for nearly 6 months over this because you’ve ALSO been charging her for internet for a rental
house she vacated 6 months ago.
Both people in the video will likely get a rabies vaccination series. If the cat can be trapped, it will likely be euthanized.
Its also possible the cat was running from something across the street and got surprised by the woman and attacked her.
@ATT
Now
@ATT
is sending another $1k to collections because they say my mom
owes for service at a rental house she vacated 6 months ago. So, for services not used, when the customer tried to close it down,
@ATT
wields the power to tank her credit score. This is utterly insane.
A bobcat is very unlikely to charge you. If it does, it may feel cornered, be protecting young, or, in rare cases, have rabies. With 1 inch claws and 1 inch canines, a bobcat attack risks deep lacerations. You'd need stitches, but it's unlikely a bobcat could kill a human.
Bobcats can contract feline distemper from unvaccinated domestic and feral cats. They can also contract rabies. The CDC doesn't list them a main vector in the US, and many biologists think these animals rarely survive rabies to the point of attacking people.
Imagine, dear reader, explaining this to the ER physician and *not* sounding insane.
“So I was carrying this dead raccoon in a trash bag and an arm kinda reached out and scraped me. No I know it wasn’t intentional, he was dead. Why was I carrying him in a trash bag? Well…”
@amoerike
@racheIaIi
Stop it. You are literally prioritizing a dead man over a living woman and the trauma he caused her.
This comment is harmful because it brings more guilt into the aftermath of assault by expecting the victim to forgive.
Do better.
Anyway, even tho a frozen dead animal scraped me, because we didn’t know why it died, I had to get a booster vax. I’d had the preventative series a few years prior due to my work, but it’s standard protocol if exposed.
We can only confirm rabies by examining brain tissue.
In the US, the most common wildlife vector for rabies varies by state, with raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats taking the top spots for most. This is why we stay away from wildlife. Not all mammals are rabid, but staying away from them means removing the risk of transmission.
Rabies is not common in bobcats, but we have seen a rise in cases in the last few years. Unfortunately when these interactions occur, few options exist. The only way to test for rabies is to examine the brain tissue, which means killing the animal.

I don't have tips on identifying rabid animals as there is a lot of variation between species and among individuals. An aggressive animal (comes to you) is more likely to be rabid than a defensive animal (trying to get away from you), but not always.
This happened during her house rebuild (down to the studs) when an absolute obscene amount of $ was coming in and out for insurance/for the house. My dad had died, my uncle (a brain injury patient my mom cared for) died 3 weeks prior, this is how it happens.
@ask_aubry
An increased startle reactivity is associated with past abuse and/or child abuse, and anecdotally, women exhibit this more often than men*. Even without knowing this about someone, jumpscare shit is never funny. Especially invading their body. YTA.
*all genders experience abuse
Just heard a reporter ask "Mr. President, are you a sore loser?" just before they cut the broadcast.
Idk who the reporter is, but give this man an award.
I don’t know what to do with myself. I laughed today and then immediately cried because I won’t ever again hear my dad laugh at his own jokes, or smell him, or hear him shuffling around the kitchen. I feel like someone ripped the wings off a butterfly and pushed it off a cliff.
