Only nine rejections? You haven't tasted grant application futility until you're hip deep in double digits at the NEA, after which you peruse the "peer" panel reviewers' comments, and realize how clueless they are. Not that poetry publishers in this country are much better.

Don Gordon, one of the blacklisted poets in the 1950s, bluntly summed it up in one of his poems: "We are only on leave from Auschwitz." The primary topic of his poems, in fact, was the existence of these weapons of mass destruction.
We have built these nuclear weapons, which is pure insanity...and there's no way to comfortably live with this. It's the main reason my whole life has been disturbing. For underneath everything is this insanity.

The poet and translator Tim Reynolds died this morning at 1 a.m. at age 85 after entering hospice the day before. He had seven books of poems in addition to appearing in over 50 magazines. I will be posting ASAP an obituary in my blog,
