Teacher-directed skip counting with unscripted changes of direction is STILL the best tool I know of for developing Ss number sense. https://t.co/7b5V49nrQz

For too long, I stopped training a powerful fluency practice, simply because it was hard to execute & Ts would give up on it when they didn't see great instantaneous results. This was a mistake!

I think "Kiss your brain" is overdone in elementary school classrooms.

An administrator arrives to a classroom for a prescheduled observation. Upon arrival, the teacher says, "Oh, I forgot you were coming today. I'm giving a test." What should the administrator do?

I like the partial product method for division but I think it should be taught in conjunction with (not instead of) the standard long div algorithm. I've seen many Ss who are excellent using the method to divide whole numbers but are lost when they transition to dividing decimals

Was tutoring a student yesterday. I asked him how math was going in his school. "We're doing a math project...but...we're not really doing math." This confirmed my biggest reservation regarding math projects.

Even if the teacher isn't a content specialist, they are still on a fast track to becoming one, simply because they have fewer lessons to plan (and thus can focus more of their energies into one subject) than a generalist. https://t.co/pqTkJO57kW

@johnmighton @MrZachG I especially enjoyed the discussion about math specialists in elementary school. I always advocate for specialization starting in first grade, i.e. students switch classes for math & reading.

Great math teaching requires an instructor to pivot based on informally assessing student understanding.

If I were training a novice to teach mathematics, I would disallow pre-made slides as a medium to instruct - not because they can't be useful, but because they create a habit of rigidly adhering to a plan
